ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JUNE 7. 1918. Jia til I ft WHAT COW-TESTING SHOWED IN ECONOMY The average production of all dairy cows In the United States Is 160 pounds of butterfnt a year, accord ing to estimates. The average pro duction of all cows in 40 cow-testing associations studied by investigators of the United States department of egriculture was 247 pounds a year. Careful tabulation of the records of the 40 associations show that a pro duction of 160 pounds of butterfat a year gave an income of $23 over cost of feed, while the average in come over cost of feed for all the cows In these associations was $47. or a little more than twice as much. Undoubtedly the dairymen who Join cow-testing associations are more progressive than the average, and own cows and farms that are much above the average, but the fine show ing made by association cows should be credited, in large measure, to Association work. Certainly the cow testing associations return many dol lars more than they cost. It Is en couraging also to know that the cow testing association records indicate that the large producing dairy cows fire the least affected by the increased cost of feeds. Therefore, every dairy man should aim to keep all his good HOUSEHOLD HINTS Sawdust and ordinary glue will fill up ugly cracks in a wooden floor. Appios should be baked in a very quick oven and basted often with the syrup. A small piece of ham boiled with string beans gives them a pleasant flavor, Marks on paint, made by scratch ing matches, can be removed by rub biug with lemon. Spreading a little flour on the ton of a cake will sometimes prevent the icing from running. Apply kerosene to tar stains be fore wetting them, then wash them with warm water and soap. Puff paste can be rolled In a nap kin, put In a cold, dry place, and it will keep nicely for one week. To make mutton Juicy and tender. spread a little fat over it and dredge it with flour 10 minutes before put ting it In the oven. To remove wax from cloth, hold a red hot Iron within an Inch or two of some blotting paper laid on the cloth over the marks. Don't waste bacon rinds. Use them for flavoring soups, scalloped dishes. also In baking beans. If the rinds are laid on top they will flavor the whole dish. If a cake Is placed on a wet cloth It will PIG CLUB MEMBER SHIP INCREASES One hundred thousand boys and girls are now members of pig clubs.
