ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. MARCH IS. 1918 SPRAY MATERIALS REPORTED SCARCE Growers Hun More Food Production by Hotter IYottTtion. Corvallis, Ore., March 5. Atten tion of fruit anil vegetable growers ts called to the need for laying in a full supply of spray materials and equipment by Prof. H. P. Bursa, of O. A. C, who has just returned from Washington, where he met with the war emergency board of American pathologists, of which he is the west ern commissioner. On account of the farm labor shortage, growers throughout the en tire country are planning to make their increase in food production tills year more through effective disease control than by increased acreage. Indications point to a great Increase In careful spraying and seed treat ment In all parts of the country. Grave doubts as to the ability of spray manufacturers to meet the in creased demands for chemicals and machinery unless orders are booked a long time in advance of the date of their probable use Is expressed This is the view of the manufactur ers themselves, who were called to meet with the war emergency board in Washington. Early orders will afford a basis of estimating the prob able demands for the season. From two to five coupons are re- I quired for admission to Liberty the- jatres at the emirs, although many of j tlie productions are of the class I which command S2 prices In metro- poliian houses. RECIPES HIGHWAY COMMISSION WAY OF MOVING CARS Salem, Ore. To add to its many problems the state highway commis sion Is confronted by the diHiculty of transporting material to be used in paving through the refusr.1 of the Southern Pacific to haul the state's cars. To overcome the order of the pri ority board of the national council of defense prohibiting the hauling of road material in open cars, the com mission bought 19 cars formerly used In the United States reclamation ser vice, at a cost of approximately $20, 000. It was planned to use these cars this season in hauling rock and other material for the pavement to be laid In Marion county between Aurora and Salem. It now transpires that the railroad company will not haul the cars for the reason that they do not come within the specifications, being of wood. Through Senator McN'ary the mat ter has been referred to Director Cenerul McAdoo for adjustment. CAMP THEATRE PRICES LOWER THAN IN CITY While figures are not yet avr liable on the proportionate number of $1 and $5 smilnge books being pur chased for use by mei at the camps end cantonments, the commission on training camp activities, in charge of the sale, states that there hns been unexpected demand for the larger books.
