COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER GOOD ROAMS MAKE BETTER FRIENDS When out in the country several days ago inspecting proposed and old roads which are sadly in need of re pairs, Commissioner A. E. Harvey re marked that he hoped the time would soon come when good high ways would connect the upper and lower ends of the county so that the people of these districts might be come better acquainted and become better friends. We agree with Mr. Harvey. The sooner good roads are built throughout the county the sooner will the people of one section get acquainted with the people of another section. There is nothing which will foster friendship nnd com munity feeling more than a good road joining communities. When communities are joined by good high ways then the communities have op portunity to visit and mingle and fos ter not only the community spirit but the spirit of progress for the whole county. Unfortunately the up per end of the county does not know much about the lower end of the county, or vice versa, but with the completion of the Columbia highway and the Pittsburg-St. Helens road the people living in the territory through which these roads will go will have an opportunity to get acquainted with their neighbors or the commun ity a little further on, and then each community will realize the needs of the other community and join ti gether to accomplish things which are for the benefit of all. First, last and all the time, the Mist favors good roads and a road tax sufficient to build and maintain roads which will join communities and link together the people of the county n the common purpose of the advancement of Columbia county's in terest. Good roads are absolutely necessary. YOUR PATRIOTIC DUTY TO BUY THRIFT STAMPS It is the patriotic duty of every citizen who is able to do so to buy Thrift or War Saving Stamps and thereby help the United States to win the war. The purchase of even so little amount as a 25-cent Thrift Stamp is a definite contribution tow ards this end. The purchase of Thrift and War Savings Stamps fosters thrift, and those who purchase these little baby bonds which Uncle Sam has issued are acquiring the thrift habit and at the same time furnishing means with which the government can carry on this war for your protection and the protection of your loved ones. To win this war we must have both men and money. St. Helens has sent to the front young men of red blood many of them. They have made the sacrifice, left good posi tions, home and severed family ties You who are left at home can help them without so great a sacrifice as they have made. The only sacrifice that you are called on to make, i ruch can be called a sacrifice, is to loan your government a few dollars Extra Long f. crossed n mm Patent' H "S"HooK J Fasteners- rnrtTrwrrTrra elicals l t-;.x-iZfr&?i&'A I A FOR SALE BY E. AND AIKPI.AXKS VITAL ( XKKl- OF IV A 15 In his recent address In Portland before the Loyal Legion of Loggers nnd Lumbermen, Col. llrlce P. Dlsque who has charge of the spruce produc tion in the northwest, said: "I was selected, to go to France In October, my ship had been desig nated nnd I had my bedding roll in Washington. I was ready, and want ed to go when my superior officers came to me and told me it was necessary for me to come into Ore gon and Washington to get out rpruce for airplanes. It took me a week almost to decide to come. Now r.U of my IS yer-.rs experience in the army had been spent in learning to do the things being done in France today and to give up going over, even temporarily, was a Great disappoint ment to me, but I wr.s convinced thai sending soldiers to Franco would not accomplish very much unless we were able to get ships to take them over with supplies nnd ammunition, and unless we could produce the air planes for the soldier aviators to use." FARMERS AM) SHIPS Two things which do not appear to have very much to do with each other. And yet they have. It is not sufficient merely to pro duce goods, they must be marketed, and ships are necessary to the farmer unless he wishes to be cut ofT from the best of all markets of the world Europe. Just as an automobile is a good thing for hauling produce to nearby towns nnd freight cars are necessary to haul the produce to the great grain centers, so ships are necesary to mar ket the produce of the farmers. Every inducement possible should bo offered to encourage upbuilding of American merchant marine. A St. Helens lady who has two brothers in the service, one in the United States army and ihe other in France, recently received letters from both of them. Each letter was written on the Y. M. C. A. stationery and in a Y. M. C. A. hut Both of the soldiers spoke of the glorious work the Y M. C. A. was doing for tin soldier boys, and the lady remarked: "Nothing is too good for the Y. M. C. A. and no sacrifice I can make b too large if I can help maintain the work which the organization is carry ing on." Any mother, father. Bister or brother who has a dear one the service of Uncle Sam will appro elate and heartily agree with th lady who made this remark. The Y M. C. A. and the Red Cross are doing magnificent work and when they call on us for help our assistance BhouUl be readily given. From this day on let's havo no more fighting among ourselves, bui let us all Join in our fight against tlit kaiser. The biggest blow we can send to the kaiser today will be r message to our fellow American? throughout this country that the operators and employes in the great lumber industry in the northwes' have at last come to understand and have faith in each other, and that during the remainder of this war they are united in a team which don'' know the word "quitter" and will not rest until America has once again won a vvictorious peace.
