In a recent issue of the Ridgelield
Reflector note is made of the fact
that Supt. Albee of the Northern Pa
cific Railroad Company has sent the
fire department of Ridgefield $100
for their prompt and efficient service,
which saved the company's depot
from a fire loss. This was a com
mendable action on the part of the
railroad and no doubt encouraged the
Ridgefield volunteer department. If
the insurance companies, for whom
thousands of dollars have been saved
by the volunteer fire fighters and the
regular department of the city, would
show their appreciation of the efforts
of these boys and men by making
contributions towards a fireman's
fund which would be used to pur
chase new clothing to take the place
of that ruined; to pay the hosDital
bills of those who may be Injured, or ;

valiant service performed, then the I
boys would feel more like answering i
every alarm. As it is now, a fellow j
may get his handa cut by flying glass, j
his limbs bruised by fulling timbers

eral application from the chemical '

THE PITTSIU'IU KOAU
Now comes word that the county
court lias let a contract tor the j
building of another mllo on the Pitts- j
burg-St. Helens road. This is cheer-1
ful information, even if the distance
is only a mile. One mile has already
ueen uuiii ana wnen mis nine con-1
tructed for Is built it will be neces -
sary to build nine miles more, lloth
the county and state should give
liberal support towards the building
of this much needed road. If they
do, it will be only a short while be
fore St. Helens and the Nehalem val
ley may join hands over a good road,
something that has been needed for
many years. The Nehalem country
is a fertile and productive one; St.
Helens affords a good market, and a
good road will benefit both.
Remember, It is only four days
before the fair opens. The directors
have promises of creditable exhibits;
now it is up to us to make a credit
able attendance. Thursday, the 20th. jtha warm llourt current that reddened

OUR FLAG
I'rlhule by I'ast (Jraml Chancellor
loiiin Hay of the K. of P.
Our flag presents the most beauti
ful combination of national colors
that was ever unfurled since the Ins
! Bnnlng of time. That flag has car-
ried more joy to more humble hearth
stones than any insignia of govern
ment Unit ever floated in the sun
kissed breezes of Heaven.
The red In that flag Is redder than
the rising sun, when it bursts above
the eastern horizon with a fuce of
insufferable splendor; redder than
t ho carnation (lower whose colors are
brewed In the workshops of Heaven;
redder than the blush of joy that
mantles the cheek of the young moth
er when she feels for the first time
her first horn's breath. It typifies
the blood that flowed in rivulets
down tho slopes of Hunker Hill, and
stained the snows at Valley Forgo,
j uncontamlnated from the Matchless
Hand of Clod, whiter than the culla
lily that blossoms beneath the foster
1 1 ii k care of the levhig housewife,
, whiter than the sucrod veil that en
velopes the blushing bride, whiter
than the silver beam that shoots the
evening star. . It typifies tho purity
I of tho patriotism that animated
1 American Manhood on a thousand
j blood bought fields and a hundred
crimson seas.
I The blue in that flag, Oh the blue
in that flag! is bluer than the arched
. dome of Heaven, bluor than the mod
est violet that blossoms in the wood
en glen on the sunny sldo of the old
j log, bluer than tho mellow radiance
that flashes In a woman's eye. It
typifies the sacrifice of the neither
who laid her stalwart first born on
the altar of bis country and kneeling
at his vacant chair prays to (lod to
comfort her aching heart, then seizes
the sword that has fallen from the
.Nerveless hand of the dead hero
l buckles It to tho waist of her strip
ling son and bids him to go forth
and conquer or never return
