ROSS Bank BIdg., St. Helens Pew people, we believe, appreciate what they owe to the home merchnnt. If they did, the hundreds of dollars which go out of this community to the big mull order houses would re main here and help build up the town. Let us consider a few facts. When you aro up against it, it is the home merchant who carries your account his particular knowledge of the work in which bo has been employed, his familiarity with other lines of tele phone work associated with his own, his knowledge of "safety first" meas ures and rules, and of public regula tions applicable to construction and his responsibilities in his partcular territory. Ho is your friend in tlmo of need and the money you : spond with him stays right here ln i town und helps to make it prosper. j Tho next time you ore tempted by the fine pictures in the mall order catalogues remember that you can buy better right here at home. I You need not ask yourself whether the mull order houses would give you credit when you have sickness In the bouse or are out of work. You know they would not. You need not ask yourself whether the mail order houses are doing anything for your town. You know that very dollur they take out of town Is preventing It from going ahead just that much. Every time you send money out of town for goods you aro directly in juring yourself. Uuy from your home merchants your neighbors nnd your friends the men who nre helping to make this a live, wide-awake com munity. , This article has been printed sev eral times, but ouch time it is print ed tho truth of it stands out all the moro, and whut caused us to use it In this issue Is because 400 pounds of Sears-Itoebuck catalogues arrived In St. Helens Tuesday. It was less than half of tho consignment, as four full mail sacks went to Houlton, Yankton nnd Tronholm. If we send the money out of our own community to the Chicago and New York mer chants who do not help us In roads, schools, or in fact anything, how fast will our community grow? If our homo merchants will give you an equal show, patronize them. j employes. !how TO CAN STRING BEANS j The Columbia County Fair dates are Weilnosday, Thursday and Frl !duy, Soptomber 19, 20 and 21. String beans for canning should be small, tendor, fresh and well sorted. When the beans within the pod have grown to any size, canning is more difficult and tho product of poorer quality from a commercial stand point. String the beans and cut them into 2-Inch lengths; cutting diagon ally or "on the bins" gives a pretty product. In glass they may bo can ned whole, packed log-cabin fushlon in square Jars. Blanch in boiling water for three to eight minutes or until the pod will bend without breaking, and plunge Into cold water for an instant. Drain well, pack quickly, and cover with brine made by adding iVt ounces of salt to a gal lon of water. Put the rubber In place and adjust the cap loosoly. When the beans are young and tender allow packed quart containers to remain in water bath at boiling temperature two hours continuously, or, If more mature beans aro pneked, an hour on i each of three successive days. Im mediately after sterilizing the filled jar tighten the cap securely and allow jars to cool away from any draft. Store in a cool, dry, dark place.
