COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER
"I pledge allegiance to my Flag,
and to the Republic for which it
stands, one Nation indivisible, with
Liberty and Justice for All."
THE WRONG WAY
Tho Oregon State Grunge, ut its
recent session, adopted a resolution
directing its legislative committee to
prepare an Initiative measure for
submission to the people to abolish
tho state senate. So far as Columbia
county ever having a senator in the
senate, it might be Just us well for
us, so far as the representative goes,
but for the state at large we believe
the resolution and purpose of the
grange is wrong. It is evident that
the grange is sacking to break the
hold which a comparatively few peo
ple have on tho legislature of Oregon
and which controls the bulk of the
legislation at Salem. Wo fully ap
preciate what the grange is attempt
ing to do, but we do not think the
abolition of the senate will have the
desired effect, in fact the abolish
ment of that body would make mat
ters even worse. The senate is sup
posed to be, and If its membership
was properly made up, would be the
balance wheel of the legislature, the
body which scrutinizes every pro
posed law and sees that it contains
no joker that would Injure the pub
lic interest. To make of the senate
the useful and valuable legislative
body that it should be, the member
ship of the body should be changed
so that each county should have
senator and only one senator. Such
a membership would prevent Multno
mah county from controlling the
legislation, and swapping favors with
other counties In order to gain the
bulk of favors for Multnomah. Until
such a system is in practice, both the
legislature and senate will undoubt
edly continue to be as it has hceu in
tho past, the representative of a sin
gle county first and the state nt
large as a secondary consideration
But then, we .of Columbia county
should worry. It has been about
thirty or forty years since Colum
bia had a senator, and we should be
used to the domination of tho pea
nut politicians of Multnomah by this
time.
HE CAREFUL AVOIH FIRES
In 'another column cf this paper
Is an Interesting item as to the prop
erty loss In tho United States each
year caused by fires. Tho total In
money caused by the destruction
wrought by the fire fiend is $200,
000.000. This Is appalling and Is
too much. Many of the fires would
not have occurred If safety first had
been practiced. Tho dry season is
now coming on, and If we wish to
spare ourselves and others needless
loss, let us be careful about fires. Ke-
iiiuuiuer, a suicn in time saves
nlno."
The new schedule of mall delivery
Is far from satisfactory. As It Is,
the mall comes down on tho throu,1;!
Seaside train and is delivered at the
postofTice about 10 o'clock. It is not
ready for delivery until 10:30 or
later. If one receives important mail
thut should bo answered Immediate
ly, there Is very little chance to catch
tho 11 o'clock mail. The postmaster
here states that tho reason for not
sending the mail on the curly train
Is that the eastern mall does not
arrlvo In timo to mako connection.
So small a proportion of tho mail Is
from tho east that it seems to us a
better plan to let tho Oregon and
California mall come on tho first
train and then tho eastern mall could
follow on tho through train. In ar
ranging train schedules and mall
schedules there was never a time
when the convenience of the people
of St. Helens was considered, and it
will never be given very much con
sideration as long as we sit Idly by
and register no protest. Tho mat
ter is respectfully referred to the
commercial club for consideration.
According to data gathered by D
C. Howard, county agricultural agent,
there is an lncrcnse of 500 per cent
In the bean acreage in Columbia
county this year, compared with last i
year. There is also an Increase of!
25 per cent of potatoes.
AMERICA'S RESPONSE
Only a few days ago, the govern
ment officials told the people of the
United States that 3.000,000,00l
wero needed for war purposes. The
people oversubscribed the amount by
a billion dollars. Several days later
the American lied Cross appealed to
tho people for $100,000,000 to he
used in the work of mercy. The re
sponse was quick and tho offerings
from tho heart. More thun the
amount asked for has been contrib
uted. Search history and see if you
can find a nation that has a heart
like America. Tho best way we can
convey our feelings Is to quote the
lunguago' of a laborer employed on
tho street work. It was only a few
days after the Rod Cross campaign
hud started when he came into the
office and said: "Well I'm proud of
America and am proud to be an
American citizen. No matter whether
it is Liberty bonds. Red Cross con
tributions or aid for a tire swept city
or f flooded district, the people of
America are always ready to help
their fellow countrymen." This was
an honest expression from an honest
heart and from a man, though not
high up in the world, had a high
conception of Americr.n citizenship
and had done his bit towards main
taining the honor of the Stars and
Stripes. It Is this same citizenship
and patriotism that has given dignity
und honor to tho Stars and Stripes
wherever they wave.
An Item from Weston, Oregon,
says that placo has secured a flou
mill. Wonder if it is the one that
wus coming to St. Helens.
The speed cop is still on the job,
and from personal experience we j
would advise not too much speed i
unless he is not near you.
"Columbia county citizens should
not take too long a sleep when the
state highway commission is llguring
on hard surface ro.-.ds, or clso they
might wake up to find that some of
the other counties have carried honip
tho bacon."
The food bill has passed the house
and will probably pass the setitte.
In fact, the senate cannot afford t-
turn this measure down, for it is the
people s measure. It Is for their
benefit, instead of allowing tho food!,. ' . , ,
gambler to grow rich at the comtmm I ': iC'"T.,.f 'T . m . .
people's expense.
During May the county agent was
a busy man. He traveled 240 miles
by rail and 4 86 by auto. Farmers
calling at tho office numbered 47,
and 4 1 farms wore visited by tho
agent. Two organizations were per
fected and 18 public meetings held.
When the matter of employing a
county agont was first mentioned
there was considcrabto opposition to
it, nnd the agent started his work in
tho face of opposition. This opposi
tion has, however, been largely over
come because many see tho result of
the work, and wo believe that if the
farmers will give a fair show of co
operation, that in the near future
all will see where the services of a
competent, hard working county
agent is most advantageous to the
county's agricultural interests.
