COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER "I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which It stands, one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All." IT'S VP TO YOC Whether you realize It or not, this 1 I it i t i 1 ,uur r uuu .1 up io jou win It. They have told you I what la newssnrv to he dnn nml it is up to you to do it; there is some- thing for everyone to do. There ' must be fighting men, selected and trained. There must be workers in Increased numbers in every line of industry which will contribute to the success ot our undertaking. There must be ready money in large quan tities, and to this end the Liberty loan bonds must be sold. So it be comes your duty and business to in- vest in these bonds. You are ex pected to make a sacrifice, If need be, to help raise this money. The money you pay is not to be given to anybody. It is not to be sent to u- mnA Tt la in ho llaarl nlmncl anltpo. ly for things we ourse'lves make, sell or grow. For instance. Suppose the shipyard in St. Helens secured a con tract for building several vessels for j . the government. More men would be employed, the wages would be dis tributed here. The timber would be cut from the forests of the country and sawed by local sawmills. Right here, a greater part of your Liberty bond money would come directly back to you. This applies as well to thousands of other communities en gaged in the manufacture of neces sary articles for the government use. As one of the leading journals of the country has expressed it, "We are making history now such as has never been known. We are making the world a safe place for democracy, and every man should leave to his posterity the heritage of bavin? ! played a part, and dona his full duty' In this drama ot ages. The task is great, but the result is certain. To have had a part in this grand re birth of the race will be a glorious heritage to leave to our children." One way to have a part is to buy a Liberty bond. Pay for It cash if you can, but if you cannot do- this, buy it now and work to pay for it. Find your place, the place where your services wll be most useful to the government, and when you have found it, fill it. It's up to you. A glance at the election returns will convince the most skeptical that Columbia county did her bit towards the initial work of "pulling Oregon out of the mud." Only a few pre cincts give the road bonds an ad verse vote, and those few, when they see the great development ot the county which is sure to come after the good roads are built, will be con vinced of the error of their ways. The penitentiary measure did not fare well at the hands of the Col umbia, county voters. As one man expressed himself Just before going to the polls, "What's the use to build a new penitentiary if the governor is going to turn convicted murderers out as trusties." Evidently this voter wag not alone in his sentiment. Billy Sunday said if hell ccuid be turned upside down, the familiar "Mado in Germany" would be found stamped on the bottom. Wo don't know whether that certain spot can be turned up or not, but from all re ports it has been raised during the past two years. It's time for St. Helens to organize a division of the Red Cross. It is a noble work and St. Helens cannot afford to be non-partlclpants. Good morning. How is the garden work coming along? Time to plant yet, but don't postpone the planting too long. Your Liberty bond la an evidence that you are willing to do your bit. I ARE YOU DOING " YOUR BIT?I What can I do. you may ask, mid that right honestly, too.
