The St. Helena Mist: Aa I had a few moments to write letters this evening, I thought I would write to you. I am now sta tioned at Yerba Duena Island, where I- have been for about a month, tak ing preliminary training as yeoman. The yeoman school la quite crowded, so I have been placed on tho special detail company until examinations are held. My duties are various, such as mess hall duty, which is re quired of all recruits, and such du ties that the officers see fit to assign mo to. We receive good, wholosome food, and have plenty of it. Although it isn't served In the moat "de luxe" stylo, we certainly get what Is com ing to us and more, too, if we want it. Sleeping quarters are filled to the limit, many of us sleeping on the floor until more tents and buildings can be provided. If a fellow expects a snap as far as work is concerned, he should not go near a navy recruiting office. The seamen get their work while drilling, and tho others get theirs In manual labor or pounding on a typewriter. Our officers aro all fine men, and, considering the crowded condition of the barracks, we receive the best In struction and attention possible. They Jdo all they can to keep us contented and still maintain order, which is very hard at this time. For amusements we have free mov ing pictures four times a week, roller skating, all kinds of athletics, tho use of a well-equipped gymnasium and a large library. We special de St Helens Lumber Co. The discipline Is not near as strict as I expected it would be, but still certain requirements, such as cloanll ness, neatness, obedience to and re spect for officers, and promptness are enforced. Our hammocks and bag gage must stand a very rigid Inspec tion each week, and our clothes must be kept clean. All the clothes we need ore given us and all material for repairing is also furnished. We wash our own clotheB, a Job that doesn't agree with the most of us, but after a" little practice we "turn out" clothes nearly as presentable as the laundry does.
