ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. . JANUARY 26. 1917 2 1 ! c5 S. C. MOHTOX. .Editor and Manager Entered as second-class matter, January 10th, 1912. at the Postoffic? lit Pt. Melons, Oregon, under the act of March 3rd, 1S79. ST. HKl.K.NS-PlTTSlU'Kt i;oai The St. Helens Commorrial Club, in no uncertain terms, has gone on record as in favor of the completion .,f Hie Si Heteiis-Pilt.sbiirc road. is to bo hoped that their co-operation ...i. :.. .1... 1. .. ..f 11... may result 111 mu hmiih.-i iu .... road The first notice of that road ulitili nnne:iii'd iii a nauor iiublished ... ....i i.;.. .......... !.. iui.nd 1SX0 ... 0, when the tolumhian mentioned the fact that Browse brother:) had I'.lem hauled a grist mill into the Nth via that route. That was thirty-six years ago, but it they should at'emp; a similar feat now tiny would be lucky to get further than Trenholm. Prom St. Helens to that point the road is good, but, from all reports, from Trenholm to Pittsburg it is worse than the ordinary worse. The distance from Trenholm to Pittsburg is approximately eleven miles, and (he snrvev made two veais ni:o elim- - inates I lie steep grades and dangerous lui.l'a. ikuuu m.iaii'i -lui; i.iiuku that $50,000 would build a good road with no grade exceeding 5 per cent. When the county seat fight was on, St. Helens promised the farmers living in the Nehalem that they would aid in getting this road repaired so it would be passable. The Nehalem valley stood by St. Helens, aud it is up to the county court und tho citizens of St. Helens to now stand by the Nehalem valley. A good road would mean that tiie farmers in that fertile section could reach St. Helens in a few hours, instead of tak ing the roundabout way either via Clatskanie or Timber. The tax payers of Vernonia ami vicinity have levied a special tax and the funds raided will be expended on the load, so it seems no more than right for St. Helens to do likewise and meet them half wa; with the citizens of tho Inited States' Harford, Mrs. J. P., work for Man on account of tho scarcity of food ! ' supplies and tho wa? prices paid for the necessities of life. be;u5i Safety first! The H. A dispatch frcm Berlin -ays that the Munich military authorities are struggling with tho beer shortage problem. That's nothing uiiriuninoii ; many Oregonians have had this saim struggle for the past year, and from all indications they will have more of a struggle during the coining year.
