January lflth, 1912. at the 1'ostoftlc.j Bt St. Helens, Oregon, under the not of Marcli 3rd, 1S7. ' sriwcKirnox katks One Yeur $1.50 Six Months COUNTY OFFICIAL l'Al'F.K WHO WAS STl Mi? Tlio case of Cooper A: Duniway vs. the City of Halnier occupied the time of the court for just four days, and practically all of the time was taken up by the several legal lights ap pearing on both sides, in showing up voluminous testimony and doing legal sparring. In fact, at times, the court room wag the scene of "opera bouffet" and was much enjoyed by the spectators. After some hundreds of volumes of testimony luitf been introduced, and the attorneys for both sides had an opportunity to make "exhibit 1" of their legal knowledge and had boon given ampk time to indulge (words and knowl case was submitted in a few minutes diet. The plaintiffs were stung; the defendant city claimed it got stung twice, e, but in I'ople who fixuivers our opinion it was the p were stung, for it cost th-. taxpayer just about $Ci) per day in order that t" outside attorneys could "show off And now conies "Marso" Jackson, editor of the Oregon Journal, with tho suggestion that the legislature pass a bill doing away with the pub lication of the delinquent tax list. He claims money could bo saved by having each delinquent taxpayer uotified by letter instead of having the list pul. lhed. Proluhly if the Journal had tho list to publish ii would not make so st .'en nous an ef fort to have the law changed. The publication of the delinquent list doos not cost the taxpayer who lias paid his taxes anything, as such cost of r.dvertising is added to the delin quent tax. The Mist doos nut think .re will take serimislv tiiu the legislature will take seriously the Journal's agitation, for it is quite evident there is a nigger in the wood pile. From Thomas Law-sou's disclosures 1 as to the "leak" from tho White 4 House to Wall Street, it seems that 4 tho deserving democrats were not A satisfied with the "pork barrel sup- A ply" and bad to resort to 01 her A sources irom which to derive an in ... come. If we remember rightly, there was something said in the democratic platform as to economy, but then we must also remember that the demo cratic campaign committee hail a largo tK-ficit.
