LUMBER CONDITIONS
ON WEST COAST
l'acltlc northwest sawmills are
turning away orders and curtailing
port notion on account of car short
age. This condition, threatening for
ueveral weeks, Is evidenced In the
weekly report of production, orders,
shipments and stocks, compiled by
the West Coast Lumbermen's Asso
ciation. The report shows production cur
tailed 21.68 per cent.
The fuct that transcontinental or
ders are 700 carloads short as com
pared with the previous week, is at
tributed not to lack of demand but
rather to a disinclination on the part
of the mills to take on business In
excess of shipping possibilities. This
policy held the unshipped balance to
slightly more than 11,400 carloads
In the "rail trade" notwithstanding
the fuct that rail shipments were 200
