They failed to have Mr. Coovert's name pi a ceil on the official ballot as "Hepublicau," not withstanding Mr. Amldon's confident remark thut the supreme court would be mundutnused to place Coovert's name on the ballot a a regular re publican nominee. The opinion of the court, written by Justice Harris, states that the pre cinct committeemen of Multnomah. Clackamas and Columbia counties bad no authority, under the law, to nominate Coovert or anyono else to fill the vacancy caused by the resig nation of Senator McUride. The de cision further states: "Moreover, the authority of the committeemen is further restricted to vacancies caused As to the West Indies there are reasons which make the Islunds de sirable to this country. The Island Saint Thomas lies In a direct line to Panama. It is noted for its deep and spacious harbor which bus an entrance of about 300 yards and Is capable of complete defense. It would make a splendid naval buse. The purchase of these Islands has been considered before. In 1SU7 a treaty was made for the sale and purchase for seven and a half mil lions, but tho senate fulled to ratify it. In 190 2 another treaty was made, the price was to be fivo millions. To tliis the senate consented, but It was rejected by the Punish government. The three Islands, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix uml Saint John, were dis covered by Columbus in 14 93. The first settlement was made by the Dutch in 1G57. Since then it has been In the hands of the English, Dutch and Danes.
