1916 i CORRESPONDENCE WEST ST. HELENS Kev. and Mrs. Snyder enjoyed an auto ride on Sunday evening through the kindness of Mr. and Mrs. 11. S. Anderson, who took tliein to Warren in their .fine Overland to the service at that place. James Lowe has placed a couple of souvenirs of the war of 1SG1-5 In the jewelery store of T. S. Robertson in this city, where they may be seen and studied by any one who wishes to inform themselves about tho wea pons of warfare. Many of us older fellows are perfectly familiar with such things, having handled them in the days gone by, but some of the younger men are asking "what are those things?" Miss Helen White returned Satur day from a two weeks visit at Tort land. C. E. Frye of Celilo, Oregon, was a visitor in the city on Monday of this week. Mr. Frye is engaged in the mercantile business at Celilo and is also postmaster at that place, lie is about selling his business there and is contemplating engaging in busi ness in West St. Helens. Ho is nego tiating with Perry '& Graham for the purchase of their mercantile interests here. Mexican news is anxiously received by our citizens here, three families being intimately connected with the movements there. Messrs. Usher and Smith each have a son in the navy, while Mr. and Mrs. Lnrabee have a son, Lieut. E. Larabee, in the United States artillery. Lieut. Larabee has lately been promoted and ordered to his command on the Mexican border. The Mexican situation and tho pos sible results furnish a goodly part of the subject of conversation among our citizens for some time now. They have practically sidetracked the school muddle and the muddier mud dle of the recall while they discuss and cuss the condition at the border. Some are for war and some for peace, but all condemn the government for the conditions that prevail. To this correspondent it lcok3 like a colossal monument to the inefficiency and stupidity of the government in deal ing with the situation. Every step taken has ben a blunder and a dis- i grace to the American nation. The J uselecs sacrifice of our boys at Vera Cruz and the flag is not saluted yet; the recognition of the bandit Carran-l za, and the assininical effort to cap- ture the bandit Villa at the expense! of millions of money, the loss of many lives and the possibility of in volving us in a useless war, all mark the incompetency of those in author ity. The old maids prayer, "O, for a man anyone, Lord, so long as it's a man,' may well be used by all in telligent patriotic citizens at this time. To all of which this corres pondent says, "So moto it be." N. A. Perry, Mrs. Perry and their daughter, Judge T. J. Cleaton and Such tobacco enjoyment as you never thought could be is yours to command quick as you buy some Prince Albert and fire-up a pipe or a home-made cigarette ! Prince Albert gives you every tobacco sat isfaction your smoke appetite ever hankered for. That's because it's made by a patented process that cuts out bite and parch! Prince Albert has always been sold without coupons or premiums. We prefer to give quality 1 has a flavor as different as it is delightful. You never And that isn't strange, either. Buy Princm Albert every where tobacco it told in loppy red bag; 5c; tidy red tine, IQc; handtome pound and half-pound tin humi dor and that corking fine pound cryatal-glaet humi dor with eponge-moUtener top that heepe the tobacco in tuch clever trimalwayt I Mrs. Cleaton, Attorney George Col lier and Mrs. Collier and son. Attor ney John Collier, deputy assistant city attorney and his wife, and Mise Thompson, daughter of the chief clerk of the 1'erknis hotel in Port land, motored to St. Helens on Sun day, had a picnic dinner and sam pled the ripe cherries nt tho former residence of N. A. Perry in West St. Helens, returning to Portlund in the evening. No; A. T. Kiblln is not going to keep a herd of autos; neither does he intend to have a garage large enough to turn his auto around in. All these guesses of the Inquisitive public are at fault. It is the now shoe shop nt West St. Helens that is to occupy part of this building now being erected by Mr. Kiblin. With this building and several new resi dences going up, watch West St. Hel ens grow. Hill Hinson doesn't ex pect West St. Helens to rival Chi cago or even Portland, but ho is hustling to "make her grow" just the same. When his enthusiasm and wideawake methods are adopted by some of our would-bo leading citi zens we shall confidently expect to see the leading street mud hole alley repaired; some new sidewalks made, aud some old shacks either torn down or at least painted. Go i to it, Hill. Your example is a worthy j one. I For the third time in the last two ; months surveyors have run a line and I set stakes along Perry avenue in j West St. Helens. We aro wondering i if it is evidence of new interests, or I forgetfulness, or just to spend tax j money. j Petitions are being circulated In i the city to stop booze being shipped j into this state. This act was forced ' upon the dry people by the wets try ; ing to reopen the Oregon breweries. SCAPPOOSE Henry Vancleavo returned homo j from Goldendalo, where ho has been 1 employed the past year. Ivory St. Clair, who has beoa in Texas with his mother for somo time, j lias returned to Scappoose, which he believes is safor, being farther from tho Mexican border. Ho is nt the homo of his uncle, Tom Cloninger. , Miss LIlli.".n Larsen of Portland, Sundajod with her sister, Mrs. L. . Brown. J. C. Edwards of Weddorburn, : Oregon, spent Sunday with his sis ter, Mrs. Dan Gust. j Herman and Gus Schmidt, Mrs. Paulsen, Mr. and Mrs. Gust and J. j E. Edwards were mebers of a craw-! fish party last Sunday evening at the Scappoose creek. Mrs. Albert Johnson is having a pleasant visit with her mother, Mrs. Krepps, who is spending a few days with the Johnson family at their high water ranch. M. J. Butler, section foreman, has purchased a gasoline engine, which he is having attached to the hand car. Now everybody will want a ride.
