ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JUNE 2. 1916 l CORRESPONDENCE j. WEST ST. HELENS On Frduy last Prof. HroluuU and wile left West St. Melons fur Port land, where they will visit friends for a while. The professor will at tend the summer school at 'Eugene. They will make their home at the latter city during tiie summer. Con siderable anxiety is felt among the patrons of the school as to tho prob ability of l'rof. Brehaut returning to this city. A very large majority have signed the petitions which are being circulated. It is safe to say that 75 per cent of the citizens oppose the action of the school board iu pro posing to cut the salary of the teacher and reduce the teaching force from four to three. Prof, lirehaut has brought the Houltou school to an excellent standard of efficiency, and to reduce the working force of the school is to cripple its usefulness and success. Economy could better be practiced in other places than to save a few dollars at the expense of our educational work. This is the verdict of all except a few, and some of them pay no tax at all. The seventh and eighth grades sur prised Prof. Brehaut and wife on Thursday evening. A pleasant time was had. Games and plays were in dulged in and a fine lunch with ice cream was served. The happy crowd left "ere the morning broke." Mrs. George Chambers and her lit tle daughters Grace and Hazel, visit ed Mrs. James Chambers at Blind Slough, going Friday-and returning Tuesday following. George says, "Batching aint nice. The nitals are not regular." Ho agrees fully with the Scripture, "It is uot good for man to be alone." Miss Nettie Amelia Snyder left on! i lie morning train Tuesday for Salem, ; where she expects to arrange fori pest gradunto work in music. Miss' Snyder expects to go east in the j early coming fall. j Karl Bennett is still confined to his home with severe attack of bron chitis, lie lias the sympathy of his many friends, win.. l)opo for his speedy" recovery. Mrs. B. I. liummer left Wednes day for Suleni and Aumsvllle. She was accompanied by her two Utile daughters, hois and Maud. Sho ex pects to bo absent for two weeks or more. At Salem, under the care of Dr. Finley, a minor surgical opera tion is to be performed for her daugh ter Lois. In tho meantime everybody is requested and expected to cheer B. I. in his loneliness. Congratulations aro in order fitf our genial barber, who quiet ly slipped awry on Tuci:.y last and joined tho Benedict order at Van- couv.'r. This was to bo a secret for sonio time but a nos?y reporter browsing around ho:i;-d the fact. Mr. a:i.l Mrs. Boiler will reside iu St. Helens. Their many friends wish them bon voyago on tho sea of life. An excellent nudienco was present cn Sunday morning at tho Memorial services in tho Houlton Methodist church. Tho church was finely deco rated with flags, liTiKiuots, and bunt- j ing, while Old Glory floated over the! door of the church outside. Several appropriate selections were; sung by tho choir, including "The j Hero of the Cross," "Battle Hymn of i tho F.epub'.ic" and "America." Miss; Xettio Amelia Snyder sang, as a solo, j "A Dream of Paradise," by Hamilton Cray. Tlio sermon was preached by tho paster, text Dcui. 4:8 and 9. Tho following veterans of the civil war weio present: Walter II. Smith, llrower Sen, James Lowe and C. L. Ayres. Tho last two were accom panied by their wives. George Chambers, witli his Ford, took fhe following company to War ren and relurn after the evening ser vice at that place on Sunday: Editor KaiiU.man, Hev. Sanford Sn.wlor, Mrs. Snyder and Miss Nettie Amelia Sny der. Tho kindness of Mr. Chambers was duly appreciated by all, especial ly by Mrs. Snyder, ns she Is obliged to use n wheel chair whenever she goes out. During tho sermon on Sunday morning ut tho Methodist Eplscopul church tho pasior said: "It is bet ter to show our kindness mid give our bouquets to our friends while they can see their beauty and enjoy their fragrance than to wait until they aro ;;one and then cover the coffin witli foliage." On Monday morning ho received a lino bouquet of while carnations and fern, with iho message: "Hero la one bouquet for which you need not wait until you aro dead." The young people's meeting at the M. E. Church Sunday evening was led by Miss Beth Perry. These moot ing.! aro much appreciated by the young peoplo, ulso by romo who arc not to bo classed as "young." This question is asked on tho street more often than any other. Will winter never bo over and summer never coma?
