very helpful talk on the needs of the

ANNUAL 8CHOOL MEETING.
The Sunday closing law ia being
gradually extended to all parts of the
stuto and thore ts no telling when
it will find Its way down along the
Columbia "where no sound Is beard
save Its own daahlngs," obsolete now.
Inasmuch as the supreme court has
doclared the law constitutional, there
will be no further appeals to a blgh
or court, although It is roported that
the retail grocers' association propose
to take It up to the ouareme court of
the United Statos.
A now ruling on the Sunday clos
ing bus boon mado by Judge Skip
worth of the uocond Judicial district
at Eugcno, In Lane county, where the
law is enforced :
That a confectionary store has a
right to sell lunches on Sunday and
that ice cream and soda water may
bo served with the lunchos. The
Judge also holds that it is a viola
tion of tho law for a druggist to soil
cigars on Sunduy.
Those opinions wero given to the
grand Jury, whon that body, which
has been looking into alleged viola
tions of the Sunday law, acked the
Judgo for instructions upon these
points.
"Under tho law a confectlonory
store has no right to keop open Sun
day for the purpose of selling candy
and ico cream, but some confection
ery stores servo lunches," Bays Judge
Skipworth, "and these places come
under the bond of restaurants. It
Is the opinion of the court that they
mny kaep open for that purpose and
hr.vo a right to serve Ice cream and
soda water with lunches, but they
have no right to sell these articles
not in connection with lunches.
"Another question," continued
Judgo Skipworth, "is whether drug
stores havo a right to cell cigars on
Sunduy. I think it is a violation of
the law to soli cigars at these places
on that day, as the statuta means
only to allow such business to be car
rlcd on for the relief of the sick. It
would be manifestly unfair and un
just that a drug store would bo al
lowed to sell cigars on Sunday when
the cigar stores are compelled to re
main closed."
