TRENHOLM.
(Too Into for last week).
Wm. Woerner was a Portland vis
itor the past week.
Wilbur Larrabee of Houlton, is
here for a few days.
Arthur Fowler left this week for
a weeks' visit in Portland.
Mr. Campbell and Melissa Cullen
were St. Heleus visitors Thursday.
LeBaron Crouse Is on a few days'
vacation in Houlton and St. Helens.
Oscar Kyle is also taking a few
days' vacation on account of poor
health.
George Rathburn, bolt cutter for
the Cooperage Co., is no the sick list
tor a few days.
Mrs. Chas. Hein and family are
home after a two weeks' visit at Ab
erdeen, Wash.
George Young met with a painful
accident Tuesday, by cutting his arm
with his ax. He was rushed to Port
land to a hospital, and at last reports
be was out of danger.
Little Rachel Petel, youngest
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ketel, fell
and broke her left arm last week.
Mrs. Ketel drove at once to Houlton
for medical treatment, returning
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown and family of
Portland, hsve bought the Elton
Kelly place and moved here Thurs
day. Their daughter. Miss Agnes
Brown, was chosen as teacher for
the ensuing term of school. We wel
come Mr. and Mrs. Brown to our lit
tle colony. Their daughters. Mrs.
Ralph Lewis and Miss Brown are
old time visitors here.

Assessor White and his deputy, O.
W. Barnes, are busily engaged mak
ing a copy of the assessment roll for
1S95.
Mr. and Mrs. Tysikiewlci of Bach
elor island, proprietor of the St.
Helens townsite, were In the city
Tuesday.
Mrs. J. G. Muckle and daughter.
Agnes, have been in Portland and
Oregon City this week. Mrs. Muckle
attended the Chautauqua during her
visit.
We are sorry to announce the sad
and very unexpected death in Port
land of Mrs. E. A. Pelthley. De
ceased was a sister of Mrs. J. G.
Muckle of this city, and was well
known here.
Norman Merrill of Clatskanie, was
in the city Monday. He was of the
opinion that a railroad from Clatska
nie to the Nehalem valley will be
pushed to a successful termination.
Captain and Mrs. Orin Kellogg of
Portland, were In St. Helens Satur
day night installing officers of Mix
pah chapter of the Eastern Star.
President Cleveland is reported as
saying that he believes "McKinley
will be the Republican candidate in
1S96 and the tariff the issue."

Smith Wagner was a Rainier vis
itor Monday.
J. S. Holbrook and H. Hill of the
BeaTer Homes, was in town on Mon
day. W. E. Wiley and J. W. Donovan of
Portland, were visitors in town this
week.
The Columbia Timber Co. logging
camp has resumed operations after
a short Fourth of July shut down.
T. S. Linton has secured a posi
tion with the Columbia Timber Co.,
and has moved his family out to their
camp.
Mrs. J. M. Lindsay visited with her
daughter, Mrs. Minnie Eurgess, at
Rainier Tuesday.
Mrs. Henry Wasser of Maple Dale,
was in town on Saturday; also Mrs.
Philip S. Linton of the Columbia
Timber camp.
Mrs. Aaron Giberson of Oak Point.
Wash., visited with her sons, W. E.
and H. Giberson, last week. She re
turned home Saturday.
Fred Woodhouse, wife and daugh
ter, J. M. Lindsay, H. M. Fowler, M.
D. Link, John Gilliam, Fred Leng
acher and A. D. Larson and family,
were in Portland Thursday to see
the Liberty Bell.

The District Forester at Portland,
Oregon, has today Issued to the Alas
ka Engineering Commission a free
use permit for over S5.000.000 feet
of timber, to be used in the construc
tion of the proposed government rail
road between tidewater and the Ma
tanuska coal field.
The Act of March 4. 1914, author
ized the Forest Service to permit the
Navy Department and the Alaska
Engineering Commission to take
from the national forest, free of
charge, earth, stone and timber for
use in government works. In accord
ance with this provision, the Forest
Service is setting aside bodies of
timber in the Chugach National For
est convenient to the line of the pro
posed railroad, in order that the
building of the railroad may be fur
thered in this way by getting tie tim
ber, piling, etc, free of charge, at
convenient points.
The permit issued today by the
District Forester allows the cutting,
by the commission's contractors, on
eight areas, most of them on Turn
again arm. and in the vicinity of
Cook's inlet, the total stand upon
which aggregates 5.600,000 feet.

July !Sth. 1915. by the Board of
School District No. !, for repairs on
school building. Plans and specifi
cations will be on file at the office of
the St. Helens Mist. The board re
serving the right to reject any and
all bids. Said work to be completed

Mrs. C. G. Caples is having a new
new bath house put In.
E. McVey went t.- Portland a few
days ago and returned the same day
H. Wharton is in poor health and
will take a trip to Hood River soon
to try and find relief.
W. P. McLay and wife returned
from Portland, where they went to
visit their sick daughter.
The cub bear is gone, chain and
all. Look out for your chickens, as
as he Is as fond of them as of a
minister.
Miss Mamie Maelay is very poorly
and has been for some time. She
underwent an operation at the Uod
Samaritan hospital, and Is improving
slowly.
Henry Oleen seemed to be in a
harry this morning. He was seen
on the ran. with a suit case In one
hand and a collar in the other, and
was not losing any time.
