County Commissioner Judson Weed of Vernonia, was in attendance at the regular and adjourned sessions of the County Court recently, and has spent most of this week in tlio county seat. About six weeks ago Mr. Weed suffered an attack of heart trouble, which confined him to his home for several weeks. However, his condi tion is much improved at present. Mr. Weed is one of the oldest residents of this county. On the 20tli of April 40 years ago, he loft his home in Ohio and started for the great West. The first two years he was in Ore gon he taught school in the Willam ette valley, going then to Nehalem valley, which has been bis home prac tically all the time ever since, having settled on a homestead, which is to day one of the good farms of that val ley. He has always been a prominent personage in public matters, having represented the county in the legisla ture, was for two terms county clerk and has held other positions of trust during his residence here. Mr. Weed came to St. Helens last Monday, having spent Sunday at Scappoose with his daughter, Ger trude. Mrs. Weed accompanied the commissioner on his recent trip. State school authorities throughout Oregon are co-operating with the State Hoard of Forestry and Oregon Forest Fire Association in carrying forest fire lessons to public school pu pils before the 1915 danger season opens. Over seventy thousand little booklets are being distributed con taining a story entitled: "The Friends of the Forest," written by E. T. Allen, Forester Western Forestry and Con servation Association, which weaves into attractive story form, witii a boy and a squirrel as heroes, the age-old prevalence of fire in these states, the struggles of the trees for self-preser vation and the interest of men and children in our forest resources. Houlton Hard Hitters Defeated by a' TOTAL TAX RECEIVED Score of 1 1 to 5. Deer Island, April 21. The Deer Island Night Hawks won a victory over the Houlton Hard Hitters at Deer Island last Sunday. It was a hard fought game and was nobody's game until the seventh inning, the final score being eleven to five. The batteries for Deer Island were Ham mer and Hammer and for Houlton, Brown and Kelly. PRIOR TO APRIL FIRST The county treasurer's office was able this week to got the total of the amount of tax collected prior to April 1, which was $19G,2S4.70. Is now the owner of a Ford car, having! annexed such an implement of pleas-! ure to his personal effects a few days ago through the agency of the Inde-' pendent Auto Company of this city.! "Teck" says the pleasures of driving' a Ford are unbounded, even In seo-j tions of the country where roads have not yet reached the degree of perfec- tion that he and ojiers of his part of the county are striving for. "Teck" says automobiles and good roads are inseparable, and henceforth bis whole time will be devoted to the good roads cause. J. W. Allen, county school super intendent, has been visiting schools throughout tho Nehalem valley this week, huving left St. Helens last Sun day morning. Ho will probably not return before tho early part of next week. Free Methodist Church. The ladies of the Episcopal church of St. Helens will give a strawberry festival and supper at the Guild Hall on Wednesday, May 6, for the pur pose of raising funds to make Im provements on the church building, which is to be re-roofed and painted. A tempting menu has been arranged, consisting of cold boiled ham, cold roust veal, baked beans, potatoes, cabbage naiad, cheese, pickles, straw berries nnd cream, cake and coffee. Kegular supper 25 cents, strawber ries 10 cents extra. Service will be gin at 5 o'clock. MAY MUSIC FESTIVAL. BAKERY PLANT HAS NEW PROPRIETOR St, Helens Mun Assumes Proprietor ship of Houlton Hakery. T. J. Bullagh has purchased and taken charge of tho Houlton bakery, and will conduct tho business under the name of Pure Food Bakery, pro ducing a brand of bread whicli he is pleased to call "O-so-good." New equipment will bo installed and the plant otherwise improved and mod ernized. All the leading grocers here and at Houlton will handle, tho pro duct of the Pure Food Bakery. Mr Ballagh has had a good many years practical experience In bread and pastry making and promises to sup ply tho trado with a first-class pro duct. Dr. Emil Enna is perfecting plans for the music festival to take place at tho High School in St. Helens May 3. To the talent previously mention ed to take part in tills festival have been added LaBare's orchestra and the members of the various church choirs have been asked to assist In the program. A general rehearsal will take place next Monday after noon at 3 o'clock at the High School assembly hall. All singers are re quested to be present. The aim is to make a splendid festival.
