Ladles' - - -Electric Lighting (.Saves Your Eyes) --Steam Heating (Prolongs Your Lives) Lath Wood . Lumber A Letter From Mr. Metsker. St. Helens, Sept. 10, 1914 To the Kdilor of the MUt and the I'eopU, ,,f Columbia County. I am a candidate for the office of District Attorney of Columbia Coun ty. In the special election to be held on the 22nd of this month my name will bo ono cf two printed upon the b-illot for that office. The other candidate, and nrn. Incumbent, belongs to the Democratic party. I am a Republican. He was not elected by the people of this County. In bis selection they had no voice. The office Is a two year ele ctive ofllce. Ho was not appointed until the next general election, how over, but for two successive terms, or for four years. H1b term of ap pointment does not expire until Janu ary lHt, 1917. This office can not be voted on at the next general election next November. The 22nd of this month is the only opportunity the people of this County will have to vote this office until November, 1916. I believe that the people of this community and of the County at large are In favor of the enforce ment of the law. I am confident hut they favor the prosecution of crime. In offering myself for thin office I am actuated by a dooire thai the people may have an opportunity to bo hoard In this matter. I want the electors of Columbia County to say whether or not they approve, or disapprove as the cuse may be, of the manner in which this office has been conducted during the past ten months. To the people of the County with whom I am but slightly acquainted md to the electors of the Co.unty with whom I have no personal ac lualntnnce I desire to say that If elected to this office the thieves, bugs, macques, pimps, fire-Betters, rapists, and crooks will have rough sledding in Columbia County. Thoy will find no friend In Metsker. Il you believe In a conscientious, doll gent, application to the duties of the office of District Attorney I shall ap preciate your support. Your vote ind the votes of your friends and neighbors will aid me. The muny friends that I have made in my on community I desire to assure that your assistance, If given me, will be appreciated, if withheld, no tears will be shed. Never yet has it been said that Glen R. Metsker ever begged bread from a friend or asked quarter of an enemy. The mothers and futhers ot Colum bia County, if I am elected District Attorney on September 22nd, may thereafter rest In the assurance that tho degenerate cowardly mongrel. whoever he maybe, who would at tempt to rape their little girl, or any body else's and caught red-handed in the act, will never be given a clean bill of health by me and Ave hours within which to leavo the State. The doors of the penitentiary will close behind him. The embezzler of pub lic funds, as well as the ordinary law-breaker, will have to take his medicine under the law. Crooks charged with crime will be prosecut ed; their guilt or Innocence will be left to a Jury; their punishment to the Court. The functions of the Jury and the Court will never be arbitrari ly nKBiimed by mo In violation of my ofllclal duty and oath of office. Thiev es sentenced by the Court to a term of imprisonment In Jail will never be arbitrarily released by me. In vio lation of my oath, and Invited to "beat It". You will always' find me at my office. Very truly yours, GLEN It. METSKER. Kaulzman Interviewed "Good morning, Mr. Kautzman." "I came In to Invite you to go down with me to the County Court Room and interview the Court and. look over the Court records, so that you would have correct data for your fight against the Court." "I can't do it, I haven't time." "Have you ever been down to see them?" ' "No, and what's more I'm not go ing to go, either." "Then how do you know you get the facts correct In what you say a bout them?" "I've heard It from men who have been there." (Voice from the typesetter's stool) 'That's not the same by any means." "Mr. Kautzman, don't you realize that If the new Court gets In they will take every dollar of road money they possibly can from this end of the County and put It on the road in the vicinity of Rainier?" (Mr. K.) "They have promised to put the road on the survey on the west side of the track." "Don't you realize that It will cost more to get the right of way there than It will to build the road as the present Court are doing It?" ,'We will condemn the right of way and take It as the railroads do." "Don't you realize Mr. Kautzman that the election of the new board will precipitate another County seat light?" "Let It come. We want It. That's lust what we want." "The present bunch Is all pulling for St. Helens." "Will we be any better off with an other bunch In that's pulling every thing for Rainier or Clatskanle?" NThey won't get It." "We'll get the new Court House in Houlton or Yankton." ' "Ha! Ha! Ha!" (Door Slams) AND DECREE OF DISTRIBUTION. In the County Court of the State of Oregon for the County of Columbia.
