SHIPBUILDING IN ST. HELEN
I
rA i 4 rTT7rt ',T - rr rr- -j
Since May 1st, 1912, four large
ocean-going steamships have been
built in St. Helens. These ships have
all been constructed of Columbia
county fir and were entirely Colum
bia county products. Besides these
four large vessels, several smaller

ones and a number of barges and
tugs have been built here. The plant
of the St. Helens Shipbuilding Com
pany is one of the most complete
on the Pacific Coast. The vessels
turned out here are the largest wood
vessels built and have a carrying
capacity of 1,000,000 feet of lumber
and first-class accomodations for six
ty passengers. On October 12th,
1912, the first of these boats, the

launched, since which time the
"Merced" and "Colilo" have followed
and now the fourth vessel is almost
ready to slide into the water. The
new vessel has not yet been named,
but following the custom of naming
tiie Skeleton.
La
the boats the company will select
some well known water fall or rjver
as a name. The launching of this
boat will take place about the 1st of
October.

fir entirely, thus demonstrating that
this timber is of tho very host ma
terial for boat construction. It has
advertised St. Helens nnd Columbia
county ns probably no other Indus
try has and is one of the leading
Industries of Oregon.
Of the ships built here it has been
laid that they ore of the finest nnd
most substantial construction of any
n tho Pacific count. Tho timber is
jf the best quality nnd the workmnn
ihlp of the highest class. The cost
if each of the four boats constructed
'lore has averaged $ir0,000, about
ne-fourth of which goes for wages
if the men directly employed In the
dilp yards. In tho construction of
"ach of those boats one million feet
timber is used.
Each vessel is about 220 feot In
length, and 42.6 feet beam. The
passenger accommodations are equal
to any of the large passenger car
rying boats, large roomy state-rooms,
amusement hall and spacious dinlnc
room.
Charles R. McCormlck, of San
Francisco, is tho president of the
St. Helens Shipbuilding Company
and is the originator of the con
cern; Mr. J ,11. Trice Is tho super

most skilled and competent boat

during the past few years had active
