The very prompt and hard work of the fire boys, taken together with the installation of the city mains into that portion of the city saved the destruction of the entire business portion of Houlton. Too much praise can not be given our fire department for the efficiency displayed on each and every occa sion of fire. It is a common saying among the people now that with the present organization and the trrunt aiir.n v of water there is very little danger of a serious con flagration in this city, and this state nfairuir will soon be extended so as to include West St. Helens as well. Tho property owners adjoining the burnod building were so well pleased with the work that checks in various amounts from $10 to $25 were mailed the fire company n appreciation of the good work done. The loss at ths fire will fall quite . .. . . l heavily on Mr. (iliniecK! wno nnu uo the Clatsop county line, the County Court and the citizens generally in this part of the Coun tv. are favoring the building of the road on the old road, where practically all of the grading and all the rights of way are finished and secured. Quite a delegation from Clatskanie and Rainier are in the city to day to urge the Court t) accept the State Higeway Engi neer's plan in order to make sure of getting the appropriation from the State. Of course If this course is followed there will be sufficient money from the remainder of the bond issue the general tax and the State appropriation to buy at least a portion of the right of way from here to Multnomah. With $260,000 of that already appropriated for the lower road it would certainly seems the better judgment to get the best possible results from the other $20,000 on about one-half the road in the county. Mr. Long thinks that Southern Florida is the greatest country in the United States, He sreaks in glowing terms of the possibilities there . for several lines of business, especially the growitg of fruits and vegeta bles, He says that millions of dollars have been and are being spent there in making canals and that the whole country is one complete garden spot. ROSS ENTERTAINS , NEW GkuUHDS A R E DEDICATED St. Helens Boys Wins Opening Game" 13 to 2 The new baseball grounds were dedicated last Sunday when St. Helens defeated the team from La Center by a score of 13 to 2. Th game was rather interesting de spite the one-sided score, and up till the eighth inning it was any hpdy'a game. Eikman and Morton were batterymen for the local team and Fitzgerald and Hanson for the boys from Washington. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the game was the accurate and strong throwing arm of Morton, who caught every man who attempted to 8 teal, by a perfect peg to second. Eikman pitched a strong game for the first of the season, not walking a single man during the entire nine innings and striking out several of the best batters of the opposing team. The grand stand and bleach ers were well filled with enthusias tic rooters, and the brass bands from both towns discoursed music throughout the game. With such support as was accorded the boys at this first game there is every in dication of a successful season in this city. There will be another game played next Sunday with some good team, perhaps Ridge-field. On Wednesday May 13th Mrs. William Ross enteftained at her hospitable home, the members of M. E. Aid Society and a few invited guests, the occasion being the anniversary of this thriving organization. The afternoon was most pleasantly spent with fancy work, and just before the delicious lunch was served, Mrs. Richard Williams sang "Forgotten" in her usual pleasing manner and respon ded to a hearty encore with one of Nevins songs. There were thirty four ladies present, which speaks well both for the popularity of the hostess and the "Ladies Aid" SHERIFF THOMPSON RESIGNS A. E.
