New hats every week at Hanson's Millinery. No two alike. Harold Broughton returned this week from a visit with friends and telativea in Eugene. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. McKay of i'ort lanU were SLllelens visitors last Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. W. tl Towell spent several days in St. Helens this week, guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. II. John. Dr. H. R. ClitT and Kenneth, motored down from Portland yesterday and spent a few hours in the city. Or. ClitT was a witness in the care of Ulair vs. Western Cedar Co. Prof. J. B. Willerson has been con fined to his home this week with a bad ly swollen face, the result of poison oak. The swelling is now almost gone and he feels much better. I. W. W. Brown left St. Helens Wednesday for Portland where he will reside. Last week he sold his store on Wllamette street to Chase and Son who have now taken possession. Measles, mumps and scarlatina are quite prevalent in St. Helens, the schools still being closed on account thereof. Our local editor has been quite ill during all of this week and we ma) have overlooked some important locals but if we have don't be too severe with your criticisms for it was uninten tional. The case of Evans vs. Newsom, for slander, was tried before Judge Eakin and a jury this week resulting in a ver dict for the defendant. Just an inkling of another large in dustry to be established in St. Helens. More particulars later. Al Lee of Rainier, was a business visitor in St. Helens Teusday. J. L. Bell a prominent business man of Rainier was a visitor in St. Helens this week. Wm. Pringle of Mist has been visit ing in St. Helens for several days. Mrs. L. F. Neff was taken to the Portlalnd Hospital last week where she was operated upon. At last reports she was recovering nicely. Misses Laura and Inez Barber visited friends in Kelso, Wash., last Saturday. The Pythian Sisters held an Initia tory meeting last night at which time initiation work was done after which a lunch was served. Several visitors from Ridgefield were present. Mrs. Roache of Eugene is visiting with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Neff, in St Helens. O. J. Evenson, manager of the Ben son Timber Co., at Clatskanie was call ed to San Diego, Col., yesterday in re sponse to a wire tel ing him that the planing mill and lumber yard of his company had been destroyed by fire. J. N. Bendle has remodeld the inter ior of the Arcade Theatre so that the seating capacity is almost doubled. The room has been extended back into the old mill office building and the stage has been rebuilt affording good facilities for vaudeville as well as mov ing pictures. Mrs. A. E.Thompson is spending the wnn relatives ana menus in Clatskanie. A. C. Palmer, an attorney from Clats kanie, was attending to legal business In St. Helens this week. J. H. Price was a Portlard visitor last Saturday. Jack Dspain went to Portland last Saturday to get some repairs for the rock crusher. The jury in the case of Mrs. Salmi va. the Nehalem Railway Co. brought In a verdict for M500 for the plaintiff for damages caused by the blasting of stumps on her land. Judge Eakin is holding court in Port land thisjweek for Judge Cleeton while Judge Cleeton is holding court in St. Helens. T. S. White is moving his undertak ing goods into the M. C. Gray building on the Strand where he will be located hereafter. The Mist is prepared to furnish all randidatea with petitions and declara tion! for nomination. Plenty for every body. P. A. Frakei of Scappoose was a business visitor in St. Helens this week, interviewing the County Treas urer about hit taxes. Wise and Otherwise Grin Abel and Frank Sheppard were in St. Helens this eek making ar rangements for running the big auto car between Ponrtland and St. Helens again. The road have become tuffi cicntly dried up to permit of a contin uous run now and early next week the run will be resumed by this popular car. M-s. J. George was a Portland visi tor during the week. Judge T. H. Crawford, formerly cf LaGrande, Oregon, has been in St. Helens all week in the trial of the case of Blair vs. Western Cedar Co. Mrs. T. LynifT.of long Beach, Wash. came to SU Helen Thursday for the express purpose of buying soma St. Helms propetry, having heard as she stated, thnt St. Helens was the best town to invest in. After being shown all over town by Mr. Laws, she pur chased two desirable lots in Railroad Add., and stated to Mr. Laws that she would come back at "an early date to make further purchases. McAllister made a business trip to Portland Saturday, returning Sunday. Mrs. Smith of the Miller ranch ar rived home Saturday after several weeks visit with friends in Portland. Agnes Brown, who is teaching at Happy Hollow, visited witn relatives at Trenholm over Sunday. Misses Mamie and Beulah Smith spent Friday visiting their cousin Mrs. Myrtle Schneider. Mrs George Wilson and son Harry made a trip to St. Helens Tuesday. Mr. Fredenberg, son of Mrs. J. l.a.n berson came down from Aberdeen Fri day, returning Saturday, accompanied by Mrs. Fredenberg and his sister, Gladys who have spent several weeks in Trenholm. The school children are bus) making out orders for garden seeds and are taking a graet intrest in the beautify ing of the school grounds, and also in home gardens, and by the way, if the school directors find out what sent? it was that but the wires to the school yard fence, and persists in trespassing on the school grounds, methinks he would be obliged to gaze through pris on bars for a while, where he would not be allowed quite so much liberty a he is here at Trenholm. A large audience enjoyed the debate at the school house Saturday night on the question, "Resolved that the mid dle man is responisble for the high cost of living." The qeustion was ably handled by both sides, some very inter esting points being (ftocussed. It was adjudged that the negative side won, E. R.
