LOCAL HAPPENINGS AND OOINGS NEWS NOTES CONCERNING PEOPLE AND JHINGSIN AND AROUND SI. HELENS PERSONAL; LOCAL; SOCIAL AND OTHERWISE Mrs. J. George spent Wednesday in Portland. Mrs. Aldrich of St. Helens visited with relatives and friends in Fort land Monday. Mrs. W. B. Mackay of Portland was a St. Helens visitor last Satur day. R. L. Tichenorof SanDiego, Cal.. is visiting with friends in St. Hel ens this week. Born, on Tuesday, Sept. 30, to Mr. and Mrs. Jas. VanTassel of Yankton, a son. Born, op Saturday, Sept. 27th, to Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Loyd of Deer Island, a son. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. C. Becker of Railroad Addition, a son. Miss Lottie Gray of Portland visited at the home of her brother, Von Gray in St. Helens last Sun day. Mrs. Wm. Ross was a Portland visitor Tuesday. Mrs. Wm. Muckle is in Portland this week attending her daughter, Mrs. Farris, who is quite seriously ill. Mrs. A. J. Deming is spending the week in Salem visiting her daughter Eugenia and incidentally taking in the State Fair. M. S. Hoven of Goble was a St Helens visitor Monday. Ada George is spending the week with relatives and friends in Port land. J. M. Lindsay of Goble paid a business visit to St. Helens this week. J. H. Price was a business visitor at Portland last Monday. Dr. and Mrs. Pern of Portland have been visiting in St. Helens for a week. Fred Adams of Deer Island was a business visitor in St. Helens Tues- day. Mayor A. W. Mueller; City At torney Day and Councilman Cron kite attended the convention of the Tri-State Municipal officers held at Portland this week. Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Peel have been spending the past week at Seaside. They will return Sunday. Miss Marie Paulsen has arrived in St. Heiens and has taken up her position in the post office as assist ant to Mrs. Dodd. A. F. Baseel of Houlton hs be gun the construction of a 2-story business building on the lot between the Perry & Graham store and the Oliver, Oliver & Plummer store. Among the appreciative visitors to the fair from outside the county was W. G. Marsh of The Dalles, who hopes to find a dairy ranch to his liking near St. Helens. The cellar of the editor was com fortably filled with some of the very which our most hearty thanks go to Tom and Dewey Cloninger of Scappoose and to Dave Vincent of Houlton, A contract was awarded to the St. Helens Shipbuilding Co. this week for the building of a new gasoline boat for Itarridge Brothers, which will be used in transporting gasoline and oils to points along the river. Geoorge Konopka, the milkman, has purchased an automobile for his delivery wagon. He is now running the machine and says he makes much better time and it does not run away as did his team of grays. The Band dance last Thursday evening was a very enjoyable social event. It was also quite successful in the matter of raising funds with which to carry on the affairs of an up-to-date brass band. J. V. Day returned last week from a four weeks trip through Maine, where he visited relatives and old time friends. He reports a vero pleasant trip, but thinks that Oregon is the best country yet. Mr. B. Noice of Seattle, repre senting the insurance department of the K. of P. Lodges, was visiting in St. Helens this week. Geo. Lemont, Rev. Meyers and Rev. Philbrook drove into town last Tuesday evening with about 100 croppies, bass and trout, the result of a few hours fishing in the Slough near the Columbia County mill docks. Rev. and Mrs. E. T. Luther re turned last Tuesday from Eugene, where Mr. Luther has been attend ing the regular annual conference of the M. E. church. Rev. Luther was returned to St. Ik-lens for the I i coming year. Blaine Sonneland wishes to an nounce to the people of St. Helens that he has taken charge of the Portland Journal and is out for business. He wishes to thank all the customers for their patronage and tn assure them that he will give the very best service in the delivery of the paper. Rev, C. E. Philbrook, founder of the Congregational church of this place, preached two very able ser mons in the church Sunday and was very affectionately greeted by many old friends. Mr. Philbrook is an uncle of Mr. Geo. Lamont. George Philbrook, formerly of Whitman and Notre Dame, came to St. Helens this week to meet his father. Rev. C. E. Philbrook. Mr. Philbrook traveled extensively in Europe last year and was one of the successful American contest ants in the Olympia games at Stockholm. State Commander Sherwood of the K. O. T. Cloninger. of Seappooac.wus attending to business matters in St. Helens this morning. The City Council has derided to build a vault In the City Hall. Bids have been received for its construction, but none accepted as yet. The increased number of records of the city and the Water Commission makes a vault a necessity and the room just back of the Council Chumber will b torn out to make room for the vault. Wm. Koss went to Seattle last Tues day on a business trip. The Masonic Hull tn St. Helens will be formally dedicated by the utTicers of the Grand Lodge of Oregon on Satur day, October ISth at 3 o'clock p. m. Invitations have been issued by the locu lodge to members of the order in va'i ous parts of the state, and it is ex pected tht a lari(C number of them will attend. The corner stone is now on hand ready to be placed. This building is one of the finest of its kin. I, in the state, not only the building itself, but thee furniture and equipment are of the very best and latest pattern.
