Several names have been men- ti'ir.i'il fur the elliee oi urmeu Sia'.e-i Senator, lor instance; rr.mtf them U injf Johnatl.an Bourne, C W. Fulton and lan J. Malarkey. Hot h Mr. I'.oiirne and Mr. I'ultnn have served the state in thh caimcity before and both are nun of recognized ability. Mr. H'Hirne hail quite a record ..L.' .il ., !,.. niitlii.t- lf tlw niMH -III' M .1 Ill" IIUlll"! parcels i n.-t law, and in the mat ter of building roads. He is now making a campaign n the line of Kuoil roads and will make a very formidable opponent for any one u ho seeks the republi can nomination. He al.to has S'iiih' vi ry bitter enemies who would not vote for him under : I . . ! . .... any coiisiueraiion. ia u loum i of fact l.e could not come within a mil;- of defeating Senator Chamberlain, who will be the Democratic nominee. Senator Fulton is recognized as one of the leading statesmen in the I'nited States. As to his ability and standing with the leading men of the nation there is no dispute. He was a valuable man for Ore Ron and the west. He is per sonally a clean man and a good one, but with all the kchhI things to he said about him he is in what is known as the impossible c!as, and he could come no nearer to being elected than Could Jonathan Bourne. Hoth of these men have been in the game too hu e; to he considered. Dan Malarkey is well known through out the state, having been in state politics for several years, hat not so prominent as either of the other two. His capabilities are beyond question. He is one of the leading lawyers on the Pacific coast He is beyond criti cism in his private and political life. He is young and industri ous. He knows the needs of the state. He would be a power in the I 'nited States Senate and the People of the state would proba bly elect him should he receive the nomination. During the last national campaign all three of these men stood with the Repub lican party, although Mr. Bourne and Mr. Malarkey were in favor of a more progressive policy in that party than was adopted. Mr. Fulton has always been a Republican and stood with the tlil party for everything it stood for. There is no denying the fact that if the Republican party expects to win at the coming flections it must become pro gressive; that is, it must reach up some of the1 policies advocated bu tt,a ...I J iJ ow called Progressive party. It can not live and have a chance to win on the old stand pat policy here tofore followed. The time has come when the people are de mandii.g some changes and it is up to the Republican pa-ty to nominate men who are in sym pathy with the demands of the people. To nominate Mr. Bourne or Mr. Fulton for United States senator would mean the election of Senator Chamberlain. But to nominate Mr. Malarkey or some other really progressive Republi can would mean the defeat of Mr. Chamberlain, who follows out the dictations of the free trade Democratic leaders with out regard to his own convic tions. The Mist is a Republican paper and would feel honored to throw its support to Senator Ful ton should he receive the nomi nation. Should Senator Bourne receive the nomination this paper would support him, but noton account of personal grounds, but because it believes that Oregon should by all means he repre sented in the I'nited States sen ate by a Republican. Should Dan Malarkey be nominated it would be a great pleasure for the Mist to devote columns of read ing matter in support of his can didacy. Should neither of these men be nominated but some other good progressive republican be nonvnated we would take the same interest and devote our best energies in support of him. The report has been current this week that the Mist was dis criminating against a certain church in this city because we inadvertantly failed to mention a reception given by that par ticular church to the school teachers of the St. Helens public schools. We have been accused of wilfully leaving this aTair out of our columns just because it was given by this church. Such accusations, of course, were not made by any responsible persons in that church, for they are too liberal and fair and know our policy towards the churches too well to make such charges, fo we will simply answer by saying to those over zealous persons who are anxious to se their names in print, that they had better look to their ow n spiritual and moral welfare before accus ing other people of things w hich they themselves know are false.
