Barnes of Clatakanie. county sealer of weights and meas ures, was a St. Helens visitor Wednesday. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Bail ah of this city on the 5th of September, a 10-pound daughter. Mother and child are doing fine. Dr. M. W. Markham of ClaU kanie was an interested visitor at the road meeting in St. Helens yes terday. Miss Grace Popejoy returned home yesterday from a visit with relatives and friends at Woodburn, Oregon. St. Helens now has an up-to-date millinery store which the ladies should Inspect before Koingr to Port land. Rev. J. West Thompson of Bos ton, Mass., is visiting at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Thompson on Casenau street. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Rutherford the past week were Mrs. Paul Allen of North Yakima, Wash., Miss Grace Rogers of Mora, Minn., Miss Madge Allen of Spokane, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis of Kennewick, Wash. Rev. and Mrs. Frank Jame3 and little son Charles visited over Sun day at thefhomeof Chas. Thompson, returning to their home in Port land Tuesday. After serving in the capacity of deputy District Attorney for Columbia County for several years, M. E. Miller resigned the position on the first of the month and Mr. Glen R. Metsker, a young attorney who has recently located in St. Helens, was ap pointed. The Aid Society of the M. E. church will give a Cafeteria supper Friday evening. Sept. 12th, at the Guild Hall. Roast beef and pork, baked beans, potatoes, tomatoes, escaloped corn, salad, grapes, pie, cake and coffee. Mr. and Mrs. Earl A. Ruhl of Portland visited with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. S. Ruhl of Ingleside Farm from Saturday un til Monday night; also Mr. and Mrs. Kreamer of Portland were down for Labor Day. Mrs. Colon Grouse and Mrs. Sum Churcfiill visited Houlton on Tuesday. Mrs. W. E. Eversaul who has been visiting at the home of her parents, xir. and Mrs. Beagle of Yankton, returned to her home Monday. School began on Tuesday, with Earl Tuppen of Hillsboro as teacher. 2t pupils are enrolled with more coming latex on. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Rathbun made a trip to Houlton and St. Helens last Sunday. Mr. Cullen of Prosser, Wash ington, is visiting at the camp bell home. Lloyd McAboy and Clyde Hines made a trip to Houlton Wednes day. Thursday, Aug. 2i, was the first anniversary of the birth of little miss Edith Kyle, and the occasion was celebrated by about twelve people. A dainty luncheon was served in the afternoon, and we can vouch for the exceptional quality of that, as Mrs. Kyle is an excellent and accomplished cook. Mrs. Harry Lowe of Houlton, who has been visiting her sister-in-law, Mrs. VVm. Ketcl. has re turned to her home. 0. T. Foster, who has been hauling gravel at Yankton, re turned to his homo here last Wednesday. Several Michigan people of this place attended the Michigan 'io nic at Rainier on Thursday, Aug. 28, and were royally entertained by the Michigan people in that city, about in all being pres ent. The picnic proved a great success. S"veral new members were 'added. The nxt annual picnic will be held at Clatakanie the last Thursday in Atiurust, 1914. Mr. and Mrs Beagle of Yank ton are visiting ;)t the home of their daughter, Mrs Eversaul. SCAPI'OOSIi August 30 was the date set by , the county court for the people' of Scappoose to decide whether! the town should be incorporated or not. Much interest has been manifested during the past weeks in this election. The present state law prohibits sa loons in unincorporated towns and the issue in this election largely became Shall the town incorporate and thus pave the way for getting a saloon here? The election board consisted of Messrs. Geo. Grant, 10. Stevens, E. C. Smith, C. E. Wickstrom and T. Koy. Mr. Hoy resigned and Mrs. (lettchel was elected to serve in his place. The heav iest vot ing was in the morning. The women showed their interest in the welfare of the community by voting. 140 votes were cast, CI for incorporation and 7D opposed, thus giving an IS vole majority against incorporation. While Mrs. Fred Uhlman was enjoying a vacation iu easm. she was taken ill and brought home. Later she was taken to a Portland hospital nndthe doctors pronouvced she was suffering from cerebral hemorrhage. Pres ent reports are that she is in a serious condition, but her many friends are hoping that she may recover. The Misses Hael ami Helen Watts spent Sunday with friends in Portland. Mr. Ih'.l from Vancouver. Wash. .has purchased the Blaufus farm and is row living on the place. Hoy Price ami wife were at the D. W. Price home on Sunday. Mrs. R. F. Niblock has re turned from her eastern trip. She spent three months visiting relatives in Pennsylvania. W. Holland enjoyed Sunday at home. Miss Carrie Stevens of Port land has been elected teacher f theSth grade in place of Miss Toltz, who recently resinned. A number of our people have gone to the hop fields for work. Among them are ir.
