munity have stood a lot of things
from the railroad company and

ing too much fare for tho amount
of travel there in. They are com
piled to travel on a schedule
tqat is anything but favorable.
Ttiey are not provided , with
depot facilities and accommoda
tions fit for the public. Switch
ing and biding falilities are any
thing hut convenient. In fact,
there seems to bo a feeling on
the part of the railroad company
that we have to put up with just
what thev want to irive us. Hut

of these Hue days. We are a
groivinsr community in every
tense of the word. We are net
ting now in a position where the
railroad company will have to
recognize our importance or lose
the business to which they are

There is no re ison why such high
fares should 1? charged from
here. There is no reason why
better switching and yard fa
cilities are not provided. All of
these things will come and that
pretty soon. Several things are
going to brinjr about this in
Droved service, one of the princi
pal things being tho automobile
service between St. Helens and
Portland. The big car operated
bycapt. Abel is being patronized
by the people all along the line
and the service given is first
class. The time wade is less
than that made by the train,
counting the lime from St. Hel
ens to Houllon and the wait at
the lloulton depot. The fare is
Ie than the fareon the railroad,
by counting the bus fare from
Houlton to St. Helens. The busi
ness being done by this auto is
in direct competition to the rail
road and means much to them in
dollars and cents. So far the
people all alons the line are giv
ing their business to the bus and
rightly so. The matter of sev
eral dollars each day taken away
from the railroad will without
doubt have tho effect of rousing
the officials of the company to
action, and it may be that more
notice will be taken of this com
munity and the service bettered
and the fare placed at a reason
able figure.
Rents in St. Helens are en
tirely too high. Dusiness houses
who are paying rents are paying
too much in nerrly every instance.
Of course there are only a few
houses to rent and the prices
aked make it almost prohibitive
foi any business to pay the
prices and nrosoer. The prices
asked for rent of these few build
ings suitable for business retard
the growth and development of
tho city. New enterprises are
prohibited from corning to town
by reason of the exorbitant rents.
The prices asked for real estate
are in moat Instances far too hign
and more than the . property is
actually worth. Enquiry at the
assessor", office ahowa that the
property is not assessed for any
where near the prices being
asked for it, and it may be a good
thing to raise some of the as
sessments to the neighborhood
of tho values placed on the lots
and property in the city and see
how much of a rumpus would be
raised with the board of -equaliz
ation Ve are going to make
some investigations along these
lines for a subsequent issue of
the paper and see how many
people are paying taxes on prop
erty at 50 per cent of trio prices
asked for same. It will no doubt
ho interesting reading. While in
the investigation business we will
also look up some of tho valu-
Btions, aaseHxed, of some of the
business blocks which are rented
and seo hovv much interest is
being secured from the invest
ment. The automobile bus running
between Portland and St. Hel
ens by Abel & Sheppard has met
with popular favor. It has been
a poge success fn.m tho start.
It is run on fchedule time and
makes regular trips. It is easy
running and safe. The chauffer
is one of the most careful drivers
that could ho obtained as all the
patrons of the line will testify.
The time made is good and the
fare is reasonable. So much en
couregeinent has been given the
proprietors of the line that they
have felt justified in securing an
other car to take care of thebusi
ress and we understand that an
other big car has been ordered.
It is the intention to operate
through the winter months just
the same and every provision will
make passengers comfortable
Electric heaters will be in
stalled and the curtains will make
it as comfortable as could br.
The road for nearly the entire
distance is rock and macadam
and almost as good time can be
made duririf the winter as is
made now. The people from St.
Helens to Portland appreciate
the service given by this bus and
are showing their appreciation
by a very liberal pat rot: age.
