There art" a number of young boys and ifirlis. as well as some olJor ones who take advantage of the water in these rivers and the creek, and w ho thoroughly enjoy the recreution of siiu mintf. In this day and age every boy and girl should know how to iwim. The ability to swim may be the means of saving many lives. Hut the swimming places provided by nature are not what they should be. There is always the danger of drowning in the deep and treacherous river, how. ever expert a person may be as I swimmer. Then there is the question of health to be con lidered. The waters of the Col umbia and the Wilamette are known t j be filled with typhoid germs, as are the waters of Mil ton Creek down here near the mouth. Whenevel a person goes in any of these waters there is danger of contracting the dread typhoid fever. Reasoning a little further b ys and girls and men will go swimming, even though it be in impure waters and dan gerous rivers. There are many more people who would enjoy the sport of sw imming if there was a reasonably safe place to go where death and disease did not sure them in the face. A good swimming tank with pure water properly safeguarded ns to depth and cleanliness would be an at traction to the community that would pay for itself many times over, both financially and as a means of saving lives. It would be a good investment for a private individual or it would be a good investment for the city to make. With President Taft the Mexi can situation was "delicate." With President Wilson the situ ation is still more "delicate." If Theodore Roosevelt occupied the White House now instead of being "delicate" the situation would probably be "strenuous." That there will be a war is gen erally accepted as a foregone conclusion by nearly everybody. The present administration is using every art known to modern diplomacy to prevent bloodshed and to avert war with the trouble some nation south of us, but with all the diplomatic skill of Presi dent Wilson. Secretary Bryan, John Lind and the United States Senate, it does not seem possible that the delicate situation can be cured without some war being mixed in. It sometimes takes strenuous treatment to eTect a cure of a delicate situation and this will undoubtedly be one of those times. I"'r Sale - Porcelain bath tub.
