H Rainier was a St. visitor on Wednesday. Miss Mildred Allen left this week for her home in Spokane. Mr. C. O. Talbert came up from Kelso this week to look after hia business interests in St. Helens. W. H. Powell of Portland spent a couple of days in this city during the week. Miss Rosenthal returned to St. Helens Monday from Portland where she has been receiving treat ment for her eyes. Ed Webster. R. Sesseman, Otto Malmsten and Mr. ' Dent of Ver nonia were in St. Helens this week. Sherwood of 'and gone to Wrestport, Oregons Helens business where he has owned ud a cigar and confectionery store with pool room, attached. The many friends of Jimmy are sorry to see him leave St. Helens and wish him well in his business venture. Miss Elsie Philip is in Vancouver. B. C, where she will visit with relatives for some time." She will be accompanied home by her sister, Miss Elizabeth, who has been visit ing there far several weeks. Morris Pratt and John Linguist started yesterday for Alaska, where they have several mining claims. iThey go at this time to do their as I sessment work on the claims and I will probably remain until late in D. Fairchild will preach at Yankton Sunday, June 8th, at 11 a. m. Subject, "The Thorough ness of Regeneration." Text, "Wilt Thou be Made Whole?" Rev. and Mrs. Fairchild would be pleased to receive their friends of the church and congregation and Blso their St. Helens friends at the spacious Staines residence now occu pied as a parsonage. W. E. Stevens and Virgil came down from Scappoose Wednesday in the new Ford auto and spent the day looking after business matters, Gus Lange and Geo. W. Ramsey the road supervisors of the two Scappoose road districts were at tending County Court in St. Helens during the week. John Bryant, formerly of Colum bia county, now a timber and realty dealer of Portland, was shaking hands with old friends in St. Helens this week. For Sale Flock of Indian Run ner ducks. W. C. Morley. Misses May and Lizzie Farnum left yesterday for Portland where they will be joined by Miss Gertrude Weed and together they will go to Southern California on the Bear for the summer vacation. Hereafter women will be required to obtain fishing licenses the same as men. Rev. F. J. Meyer and family of Kalama were the guests over Sun day of Mr. and Mrs. C. II. John Mr. Meyer preached in the Con gregational church morning and evening, and was reported by those who heard him to be one of the most convincing speakers who has ever occupied a pulpit in St. Helens. Mrs. James Dart and Miss Dart visited in Portland on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Masten visited in this city on Monday. Dr. and Mrs. Gift, accompanied by Mrs. Frank Dowe of National City. Calif., who is visiting at the Cliff home in Portland, motored down Sunday and visited with Mr, and Mrs. C. H. John of this city. Miss Leona Perkins visited last week with her mother at Drain, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Keed and baby Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Don Felton and family, Mr. and Mrs Fred Chamberland. of Portland, and Mrs. Morley were guests of the H. J. Anderson family Sunday. Misses Anne and Susie Ketel have joined a party of Portland friends and will camp for a month in the mountains. The Ladies of the Congragational Church will hold another of their popular cooked food sales at. the store of C. II. John & Co. next Sat urday afternoon , J. W. Hunt, who has been em ployed in the office of the Sheriff for the past two years, has resigned at work on the pavilion at the Washihgton Square Fair Grounds and the building is rapidly assum ing shape to hold the exhibits. Just as soon as this building is com pleted work will start on the sheds and other buildings so that every thing will be in readiness when the fair time comes around. Mrs. R. Cox visited in Portland Wednesday, returning on the Iralda. Jacob George and J. L. Zipperer went to Portland yesterday where they will take the 32nd degree of Scottish Rite Masonry. " Misses Mary and Ins Griffiths left this morning for Gold Hill, Ore., where they will spend the summer with their aunt. Miss Lulu George visited friends in Portland yesterday. Mrs. Clara Busby of Vancouver, visited her son. A. L. Stone, in St. Helens last week. Mrs. Claud Jones came down from her home in Portland Thurs day to visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Way. Dr. and Mrs. Fenton and Mrs. E. F. Younger visited at the home of Judge and Mrs. Dart last Sunday. Mrs. O. A. Erickson of War ren visited with friends in St. Helens Wednesday. Mrs. A. W. Mueller and Miss Von Essen spent a few days in Portland this eek. Mrs. Frank C. Ross, aunt of Dr. L. G. Ross, who is visiting here from Wisconsin, has been sick with tonsilitis this week. Born, to Mrs. Turned on Tues day, June 3rd, a daughter. Mrs. A. L. Stone spent the first part of the week in Portland, visiting friends. Percy George of Portland spent Sunday with his parents in St. Helens. W. W. Gabriel, who has been working at the Creosoting Plant in the installation of machinery, was taken ill about two weeks ago with acute pneumonia and has been critically ill since. The Goble schools will close this week and the largest eighth grade class in the history of the school will be graduated. The year has been most successful in the schools and the patrons are well satisfied. J. H. Wellington has started work on remodeling his auto barn into a residence. He will make a modern cottage of it and will rent it. Mrs. T. J. Elliott and little son of Portland are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Elliott in this city. Will Waters will return today from Corvallis, where he has been attending the Oregon Agricultural College. Mr. O. W. Elliott of Portland was In St. Helens Wednesday visit ing with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Elliott. Reports from Clatskanie are that the delta gargens are still out of water and there seems to be no danger of an overflow. The resi dents of the dyked land are work ing their grounds as though there was no danger of water. Mrs. Isbister and children re turned last Saturday from a week's visit with relatives and friends at Albany and Salem. Frank Bishop, who will be the first Mayor of GoMe, was looking after business matters in St. Helens yesterday. Attorney L. S. Thomas of Rainier was attending to business matters in St. Helens Wednesday. N. F. Baker and family of War ren were in the ciiy on Thursday. Mrs. J. W. Allen has accepted a position with Bradshaw Bros, wholesale milliners in Portland, T. J. Flippin of Rainier was in St. Helens yesterday. He'wiys the water at Rainier is up so high that one of the mills has closed, lut the others are still running. Mr. and Mrs. L. L. MolTett, who have been living in Eastern Oregon for several months, have returned and yesterday closed a bargain for the purchase of the Columbian Rooming House at Houllon. They will take charge of it in a few days and will run the house as a first class rooming house. C. O. Dahlgren, a prominent farmer of Warren, is in St. Helens today. The Pacific Coast Hospital has opened for business and already several patients have ben received. Tomorrow two ojerations will be performed there. Notices are out announcing a school meeting for the St. Helens district on Monday, June lGth, forthe purpose of electing a di rector and clerk. The infant child of Mrs. Turner, who lives in Lottville, died this morning. No funeral will be held on account of scarlet fever. Invitations are out for the wedding of Mr. Philip Hart of St. Helens to Miss Milla Wessin- ger of Portland, to take place in Portland on June 18th. Mr. Hart is a stockholder in and con nected with the Columbia County Lumber Co. of this place. Miss Wessinger is the daughter of Paul Wessinger of Portland. They will make their home in St. Helens. Next Wednesday at the Mas ten home in Houlton will occur the wedding of Mr. Ben W. Per kins and Miss Eva Masten. Mr. Perkins is a well known young timberman, being connected with the St. Helens Timber Co., in charge of one of the departments at the camp, while Miss Masten is one of the most popular and widely known young ladies in this part of the county. Last Saturday afternoon a birth day party was given by Dorothy Guild at her home. Many games were played and a dainty luncheon was later served. After luncheon the children were grouped around one representing grandma and had their picture taken. Those present were: Dorothy Guild, Dorothy and Naomi Akin, Edna Lynch, Edna I'opejoy, Alice and Tootsie Black burn, Merilla and Louise Black, Beatrice Allen, Helen Ricen, Helena DuPont, Helen Dodd and Grace I'opejoy, grandmother. A pleasant surprise party was given last Thursday evening at Mrs. Richardson's, in honor of Misses j Mary and Iris Griffiths, who left Friday for Gold Hill, where they will spend the summer. The even ing was spent in games and later a luncheon was served. All seemed to enjoy the evening. Those present were: Mary and Iris Griffiths, Gladys Hobba, Merna Yeomans, Edra LaBare, Ella Hatton, Maud Harrison, Grace Popejoy, Harry Richardson, Garrold Wicks, Arnold Hobbs, John Southard, Dewey Harrison.
