One m ,'ancc "f the inconvenience of h time o IrJivinir roruanci is ih fart that neveral auto loads ,,f people have tfono to I'orllun it.'!v from St. Helens to witness heball ifaines. for it is impos sible for a person to tfo to a Kame :n I'ortlaiul and then catch the rain out at that hour. Then for i business trip the time for leav nit is at least an hour too early IV matter of chaws, too. is exorbitant, three cents a mile fur the amount of trallic from Uuulton and St. Helens to Port 'nd. The people of this com munity should rise up and pro test auuinst such charges. No more serious draw back to' the ilevelopnient of the county exists than the unrt a-ionablenesB of the railroad company in its dealings ith the people. The needs and wants of the people are never considered by the company, and never will be until they are forced to tlo so. There is no reason in the world w hy an elec tric line does not extend from Portland down the river 110 or -lo miles, or say down as far as Rainier, except that the same company that operates the rail road also has control of the elec tric franchise, and just so long as they can continue to get the business, make exorbitant charges and keep out opposition, no electric road will reach out this way. In no other direction from the city of Portland is there to be found a better or more productive territory than down this way. Why wouldn't it be a good idea for the people of this community get together ami kv what can be done towards Kctting lx'tter and cheaper service? The Workmen's Compensation Law as passed by the last legis lature has Ix-en referred to the people and will be held up until November, when a special elec tion will be held. There seems to be no doubt of the passage of the bill by the people, and yet there is considerable opposition to it. That the bill should be come a law there is no question, as it provides for the taking care of injured workmen and their families in such manner as no other method has ever done. The law has been tried out in otheH states and has proved successful. It will do away with the so-called ambulance chasing lawyers and will provide prompt relief in time of need, and much more relief than was ever furnished by the "Id method of insurance settle ments and long druwn out litiga Kation. Now that the question i to bo submitted to the voters of the state it behooves every one to get a copy of the bill and "tudy it up so that a full and in telligent vote may be cast. "r C W. I.iddell.
