Mr. HufT, who hashought a piece
of the Stevens place ami built a
house there, brought his family
down from Portland this week and
they will make this their place of
Miss Mabel Terry of Portland is
visiting at N. F. I'.aker's this week.
A basket social was given at the
school house last Friday evening,
the proceeds of which were added
to the piano fund. There were
quite a number of pretty and odd
baskets sold. Another feature was
the fish pond and everyone who
fished caught something. Quite an
enjoyable evening was spent and
about thirty-live dollars cleareJ.
Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Anderson cele
brated their silver wedding at their
home last Thursday evening.
Otto Frickson returned Wednes
day from a visit in Portland.
A concert and entertainment will
be given by the Warren band F'ri
day night, May Jth.
F, . McKay left last Friday for
Alaska for the summer, where he
will be engaged in building a
Supt Kulston, Virgil Stevens.
Watts Price and Loren Johnson
went to Uidgeliehl last Saturday to
see a field meet, which failed to
meet. They report a pleasant trip.
J K. Dunwoody has moved with
his family into the Watts cottage.
Mrs. II. N. Stanton was taken
to the hospital last Sunday suffering
from an attacl of paralysis. She
is reported some better. Her many
friends will be glad to know of her
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ross of St.
Helens spent Sunday w ith the Wash
Mrs. Albert Johnson returned
Tuesday from a visit with her
Tuesday evening a large com
pany of people assembled at the
Watts & Price Hall to give a fare
well to Supt. Ualston anil the other
teachers who will not be with us
next year. Seapponse has been
most fortunate in the work of the
school this yenr, and all regret the
break that will come from a change.
Mr. K. O. Hundy will take Mr.
Ualston's position on Monday next,
lie comes well recommended and
we will give him the best of our
support to hnve the school work
continue as now.
Mrs. J. V. Allen and daughter
F.lizabeth, aged HI, wife and only
daughter of J. F Allen, who lives
at Hunter's Point on the Columbia
Liver, one mile south of Ileuben,
were drowned near their home
Friday. April IS. Their bodies
were recovered Saturday morning.
Mr. Allen had started for Kalama
in a gasoline boat, but ran aground
on a sand bar 50 feet from shore.
His daughter got into a small boat
and went to his assistance. After
Mr. Allen was helped off the sand
bar he headed for Kalama and did
not look back. His daughter is sup
posed to have fallen out of the
boat on her return toward shore,
and her mother, seeing her fall, ran
to her , rescue. Hoth bodies were
found near the scene of the acci
dent. The boat was caught by the
Columbia Timber Rafting crew a
distance below. Mr. Allen came
here from Nebraska about two
months ago. He bought the farm
from W. H. Milne. Tne funerals
were held at Kalama, Wash., on
Albert Ijtrson received a tele
gram from Kiehland Center, Wis
consin, on Wednesday, stating that
Ibis father was not expected to live,
and he started for that place Thurs
Miss Itvelle Conned of Portland
visited during the last week with
Miss Laura Alexander. She re
turned home on Tuesday.
A. Ciiberson and family left for
Has tern Oregon, Monday, where he
and his three boys expect to take

between two days for parts un
