One of the important recom
mendutiuns of Mayor Mueller was
the one t oncerninjr public docks.
At the present time there is no
duck ut this place where small
boats ciin tie up, nor is there any
dock here where lartre boats cr n
land except those privately
owned. The larjfe mill dock is
all used by that'eoncern; and yet
numbers of boats have to land
there in order to land at all,
much to the annoyance and dan
ger of the mill company and the
inconvience of the boat owners
and passengers. Hy all means
there should be some more docks
built in St. Helens and the city
itself should have one. At the
foot of St. Helena street there is
an ideal location for a public
dock, as is there also a good lo.
cation at the foot of Willamette
street, to Bay nothing of the
Strand which is still in litigation.
This is a matter that should re
ceive the earnest consideration
of the citizens and property
owners of this city and steps
should be taken right away to
provide ample dock facilities.

Our "non-partisan" United
States senator, Geo. E. Chamber-! j
i.ln. with his democratic col
league, Harry Lane, have per
formed a great aervice to the re
Dublican party of the State o
Oregon by recommending for
appointment only those demo
crats who have been loyal to th
party. Any democrat who has
registered as a republican at any
time, regardless of his beliefs
has no chance for an office. He
has killed off any and all chance
ha may have had of getting office
at the hands of his party by
having taken part In the republi
can primaries. It it a notorious
fact that thousands of democrats
have, during the past few years
done this very thing; registered
si republicans in order to take
part in the republican primaries
but now they are to pay the
penalty. This Is good politics
too. and is right in principle. It
will also have the effect of keep
ng the party men in line here
after and will probably result in
a number of office seekers and
their friends in actually becom
Ing republicans too.
