On Friiiy morninjr. Feb. 28.
about 3 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Divens who live in the North
Dank depot, were awakened by
the noise of someone just outside
the front window of their sleep
ing room. At first Mr. Divens
nrde no investigation, thinking
it was only footsteps on the
travel, but it developed later
that the burglar had sawed
through the pane of glass and re
moved it; however getting no
farther, as he made his timely
getaway before the city marshal
arrived upon the scene. Mr.
Divens thinks that the would-be
burglar, knowing it to be the last
of the month, figured on a haul,
as he probably counted on there
being considerable cash on hand
at this time. .
- Houlton is such a quiet, peace
fol place that time hangs heavily
on our peace officer, the city
marshal, consequently Mr. F. J.
Hastings, who has been entrusted
with the position for the last two
months, took it upon himself to
liven things up a little. He was
standing in one of our public
dispensaries of liquid joy when
R. L. Welch, with whom he seems
to have had some previous un
pleasantness, came in, which
seemed to anger Mr. Hastings.
A wordy quarrel ensued and the
Marshal threw his badge of offi
cer on the floor and pulled a gun
on Welch. The proprietors of
the place promptly disarmed the
beligerant one, after which he
departed for parts unknown. It
is understood that a warrant was
worn out and a deputy sheriff
sent in pursuit.
J. O. Divens is about to com
plete plans for a modern 5-room
shingled bungalow which he will
have erected on his lots lying di
rectly back of the North Bank
depot. This will be one of the
many notable improvements that
are about to occur, and it all
points toward a speedy and
favorable awakening of Houlton,
which, with the enterprising
merchants and manufacturers to
boost, will doubtless be a credit
to its neighboring city, .thrifty
St Helens.
. An interesting and heated ses
sion of the city council was held
. at the regular meeting Monday
evening. A number of ladies
were present for the purpose of
ascertaining what was being
done with the city money. While
the ladies and citizens may not
have a voice at the meetings cf
the council, they will surely have!
a loud one when it comes to vot
ing at the bond election.
Misses Dunn and Fake were
hostesses at a very delightful
dancing party on Wednesday
evening, the 26th, at Bishop's
Hall. The music was exception
ally good. Mr. Wilson played the
violin and J. L. Dean the piano.
A number of St. Helens' younger
set were present and it was an
altogether enjoyable occasion.
The Vermont Hotel, so long un
occupied as a public house, is
about to be opened. It is under
stood that the entire building
will be thoroughly renovated and
remodeled and will be conducted
as a rooming house, with a cafe
in connection.
On Tuesday afternoon from 2
until 5 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Ketel very charmingly enter
tained her club the "Win One,"
composed of the ladies of the M.
K. church. Dainty refreshments
were served. Several St. Helens'
ladies were present: Mesdames
Dspain, Hazen, Harry Bennett,
W. C. Morley and J. Black.
The moving picture show had
an added attraction on Thursday
evening, a team of vaudeville
performers, the Havelocks, who
did their best to entertain a
packed house with songs and a
sketch. While not ranking as a
professional, the man, Havelock,
did rather well. His voice was
not bad, and his acting, especially
in the sketch, was not that of an
amateur artist
J. L. Dean, who for a short
time was in Houlton engaged in ;
the barber business at Fred Has-;
tings old stand, left on last 1
Thursday a. m., presumably fori
a more fertile field for his labors.

rived on Tuesday and will re
main several days.
The city well is the principal
theme for conversation at

chinery, and will ascertain if
there can be a well or if it is a
mere bottomless, waterless pit.
Workmen spent the whole of the
winter a year ago to no avail.
