Sd far as we are able to ascertain the statement that the state would take i-ver the Columbia river rood nrul maintain it as a state highway, after it w.is rnul't'. ' l' fiiii: bed. came fnun the State Highway i,..i.i....r Ilia htaU nent whs the neai e. t to ut) t.fli..-it.l state ment th it il has ieeu p oible to get, and it was qualified by say ing that nothing certain could be promised but that it was the in tention of the State Highway Commission to take over the main trunk line up and down the Columbia rivvr. perhaps from The Dalles to Seaside. Whether or not they will do so is up to the Commission and no positive decision can be reached by them until the road is completed. How ever, we have every reason to believe that such will be done. As to the Nehalem road, bo far as we can ascertain, nothing has ieen said about it from any reliable source, although there may have been such a statement made. If so we are unable to tr..cj it down as coming with any degree of reliability. So the matter stands something like this: One of the officers of the state has said that the state would more than likely take over the Columbia river road after it is completed and maintain it as a state highway, tut that is as far as it goes. However this may be the fact stitl remains that the roads should be built anyway whether they are to be maintained by the state or the county. If the state dors not take them over right away after completion it is bound to do so later on. In presenting the matter of issuing bonds of the county for such an amount as is proposed every taxpayer ami voter should Ih thoroughly posted as to all the details. There snould be no protases made nor any state mits regarding it that might or could mislead any person in ar riving at a conclusion as to how to vote on the question. The facts should be published broad cast and before the election comes around every voter should be posted with reliable informa tion, so that no embarrassment would follow by reason of broken promises or misleading state ments. All of these and many more use. ful bciences and branches being taught to our boys and girls, yet we ell are willing and do leave it up to the teachers and pupils to work it out without the sanction or counsel of the parents and citizens. Next Friday night. January it. 191 1, at the auditorium of the I I t 'II' A l St. Helens school uuiiuing, me local debating team will meet the Astoria High school debating team. A small admisi.ion fee will be charged to pay the ex penses. On the same evening another portion of the St. Helens debaters will debate with the Astoria team at that city. If our team wins here or there it will then be matched against St. John or some other state school team. At the meeting here next Friday let the people of St. Helens turn out to hear the pu pils.
