reports from our state education
al representatives of the fine co
operation that was given them,
and whatever success we achieved
was through your help.
We know that termination has
certainly not solved all the prob
lems of the Klamath Indian peo
ple. In fact, while it might have
solved some, it might also have
created others. I want to assure
you that I, as Governor of the
State of Oregon, and all the state
governmental agencies stand
ready to help you in any way we
can in the critical years that lie
ahead. I know that you, in turn,
will continue to recognize and
fulfill your responsibilities as
citizens of the state of Oregon
and of our country.
Sincerelv yours,

had many problems, and that
there will continue to be prob
lems. Our Education program
staff has had first hand contact
with the situation among your
people and had an oportunity to
see the progress that you made
during the past six years. As the
Klamath Education Program
is terminated, the burden of re
sponsibility for your future falls
more heavily upon your own
shoulders. Wc arc confident that
you will meet the challenges that
still face you with courage and
intelligence.
I know that Mr. Putnam en
joyed working with Harvey
Wright and his staff on this
special program, and that he is
happy to sec it come to a satis
factory conclusion. I am happy
that I, too, had a part in it as the
new Supcrintcndant of Public

ure. LEOX P. MINEAR
Supt. of Public Instruction
The Federal Government has
terminated its supervision over
the Klamath Indian Tribe and
with this final issue of the Klam
ath Tribune, the Klamath Edu
cation Program also comes to an
end.
All of us on the staff of the
education program would like to
express our appreciation to the
many tribal members who helped
in making our work easier, enjoy
able and satisfying. We have had
the opportunity of getting to
know many of you personally and
to count you as our friends.
The last six years were filled
with confusion, anxiety, and ex
Act." The resolution further resolves
that "the Secretary of the In
terior is requested, in connection
with the functions of the Execu
tive Committee as outlined in this
resolution, to set aside sufficient
funds of the Klamath Tribe prior
to issuance of the Termination
Proclamation, as may be neces
sary to defray the expenses and
salaries of the Executive Com
mittee for necessary and proper
meetings in carrying out its func
tions representing the tribe and
its members on the matters set
forth in the resolution.

pectations and our staff, located
as we were on the reservation,
came to understand and appreci
ate the problems that you had to
face.
Those were trying years but
we feel that the Klamath people
met the challenges of those years
with dignity. The individuals" who
became the concerned leaders of
their communities, the birth of
the scout movement in Hcatty,
the wonderful members of the
Reservation Discussion Group
and their contributions to the res
ervation area, the turbulent tribal
meetings and the tribal leaders
who grappled conscientiously
with the grave tribal problems,
are some of the things we shall
always remember. Seeing these
positive contributions by tribal
members made our work all
worthwhile.
Although our education pro
gram is no more, it seems that
our local staff members will re
main right here in the reservation
area. Gleta is, of course, a native
of Chiloquin and has her home
and family here. Hill has a job
with a labor management firm
and will be stationed in Klamath
Falls, and Zak will remain in the
reservation area doing in general
the same work he has been doing.
Our desire to help you in your
educational and other problems
has not been affected in the least
by the termination of the Klam
ath Program. We want to main
tain our contacts with our many
friends here and to continue to be
of help.
