HATCHER DIVIDES TIME BETWEEN SAW HORSES AND RODEO HORSES "It's a damned good course," states Harold Hatcher, referring to the carpentry course he is now taking at (VIM. under the Klam ath Education Program. Harold was horn and raised in the (hil(Muin area, attended (hilopun schools, and started his training at O.T.I, in September, 155. The course is two school years in length, and Harold is now on the second lap. In his first year of training, he took courses in blueprint reading and drafting in addition to extensive work in carpentry, including both lectures and shop. During current school ear Harold is taking more courses of the same type, with the work being along more ad vanced lines. Some of -the specific matters studied include w all sheathing and insulation, steel square, hardware, roof framing, estimating costs and materials, safety, use and care of tools, scaffolding and staging, concictc form construction, and interior and exterior trim. In taking the muise. Harold has built a number of articles, in cluding tool boxes, ;t shadow box. a do;; house, and several tables. Since students in the course pay for the lumber they use, the ar ticles they build become their property. Harold has thereby accumulated mute a bit of useful furniture aiound the house. 1 larold's class also sj.mt consider able time last year helping to build a new office in the automo tive shop at ( VIM. To avoid keeping his nose too close 1 1 the tape measure and chalk line, Harold has participated in divcrsionarv activity in the form of rodeos. During the past school year, he took part in rodeos in Oregon, Washington, and Cali fornia as a member of the O.T.I, rodeo team, bringing home prizes on several occasions. He plans to follow the circuit with the team again this year. . Harold states that he is not certain as to what he will do after he completes the course next June. He is thinking of getting a job in the carpentry field or of going ()" i cabinctmaking, which is a related course offered at O.T.I, covering such items of in struction as joinery, bench work, saw filing, interior and exterior trim, and painting and finishing. 0 Education Office Gives Halloween Party The Education Office held an impromptu "trick or treat" party last Halloween Night for the children of the Chilojuin area. An estimated 100 to 150 young sters passed through on their animal rounds and collected their share of the lout, which included candy, apples, cider and dough nuts, (lames were conducted and prizes given to the winners. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves so much, including our staff, that a similar party is plan ned for next Halloween, provided we recover in time. A huge truck lumbered up alongside a sports car stalled at the roadside and the trucker called out, "Whazzanuttcr, you need a new flint ?"
