Chief Wells gener ally lands them on a charge of violating a city ordinance and Judge Denman im poses a heavy fine. The peddler before him yesterday was inclined to be a little stubborn, so his sentence was $10 cash or ten days in jail at hard labor. Chief Wells was instructed to feed the man on bread and. water if he refused to work. Tonight at the College Armory a bunch of old basketball stars with su perb records will play the first team. Moores and Rhinehart, ' of Portland, Skeeter Swann, Cute, and Bilyeu, each one 01 the best ball tossers that ever blew down the pike, will be in the game and, in all seriousness, the regulars halfway anticipate being beaten. The game is certain to be a fast one and thoroughly enjoyable. The Juniors, and Sophs also Play, . ; . - 'i Frank Lutz, who last fall bought' 340- acres of land about ten, miles south west of Corvallis, is grubbing out about twenty acres-of old orchard and is put- ing in about $500 - worth ' of woven wire fence. ,- He proposes to make two blades of grass grow where only one grew before, and in the near future he will put up new buildings and make a fine farm of. it. The orchard was mostly prunes, had been neglected for years and was badly infested with borers ; he thought the best plan Was to clean it all but and start anew. We need more such . enterprise on Route 2. There is lots of good land not producing more than half what it should.. It may be said for Route 2 that . E. L. Davis's and J. P. G. Henderson and sons' regj istered Jerseys are doing ! fine. Albany Democrat: "Rev. J' R. N. Bell, D. D., pastor of the new $25,000 church and $4500 pipe organ, of Corvallis, was, in the city last evening on his way home from Eugene, where he told the U. 0. students all about Shakespeare. He was wearing the honors conferred upon him by the Gazette-Times of be ing one of trie, promoters of the $115, 000 Corvallis purse ior the J Johnson- Jeffries fight, with 'becoming modesty, Not to be outdone by the Gazette-Times, as a humorous prevaricator, the Demo crat gives this: The Dr. displayed, to J. C Hammell, of the Hotel Revere, $65,000 in $20 gold pieces, carried in his vest pocket, the balance after put ting $50,000 in a Corvallis sand bank, having "borrowed it of Rev. Mount, of Eugene, out of his last month's salary. Booster Hartog promised to send 50, 000 Eugene people on special trains to advertise the city, and see the contest. Knowing Albany's high standing as a law abiding city the Dr. made no effort to interest people of this cultured city. Corvallis claims a special advantage . in the number of Johnsons in the city, and the fact that Pete Rickard has the same name ' as Tex Rickard, another celebrated promoter. The McKenzi Merry Makers whom ' Dr. Hanford was after for money due him several months squared things yes terday and all is serene on. the Potomac. Albany may be "law abiding" and cultured but she is hardly modest. The streets are lined with bare imbs and the Democrat talks of people seeing tne comet with the naked eve. Cnt-! ting out near beer after it's found to ! be no good isn't sufficient occasion for putting on airs. .' " Now that the big prize fight proposition-has been called off,' it may be stated that all the stories published have been fiction. The idea originated iii a real estate office in Corvallis and I after some of the parties whose names j were mentioned had talked it over it j was brought to this office, and in a spirit of good f un this paper carried ' out the joke. "No one of the . men j named wants a, prize fight , here. Any sane man knows that a 'prize fight is about the most degrading, social 7. in-' fluence on earth. It attracts the vile ! and vicious from : all corners of the 1 globe. It surrounds itself with the' atmosphere of the slums and is un-i speakably vulgar, The pummeling the ' men give each other is not more bru- ' talizing than football in its effect, but it's the atmosphere that counts. The ! prize fight has everything about it sug-! gestive of the saloon, the bawdy house, ' the gaming table, the race track all that is fostered byfeak men and wicked men men without moral concept, with- ! put sense of their obligation to society and to themselves. No one wants a 1 prize fight here the men mentioned as favoring it would fight the idea. But ' all' were parties to the joke. f Rich Men's Gifts Are Poor Beside this: "I want to go on re .cord as saying that I regard Electric j Bitters as one of the greatest gifts ! that God has made to woman, writes ) Mrs. O. Rhinevault, of Vestal Center, ' N. Y., "I can never forget what it has done for me." This glorious medicine ' gives a woman buoyant spirits, vigor of pody and jubilant health. It quickly cures nervousness, sleeplessness, melancholy, headache, backache, faint ing dizzy spells: soon builds up the weak, ailing and sickly.
