GREAT THINGS FOR WILLIAMETTE

other hand, it means that the
town that fails to arise to a full
appreciation of its new opportu
nities will be forced to bear the
humiliation of having its trade
taken from its local merchants
and concentrated in the larger
and more progressive cities.
Avoid the fact as we may.
the tendency of the present age
is toward centralization. And
no other one factor is contribu
ting so strongly to this condition
of affairs as the suburban rail
way. With the rapid extension
of the trolley lines in every di
rection from Portland, a few
strong cities will be build up in
the Willamette Valley, while
the weaker and less progressive
town will be swallowed up by
the tide of progress."

After pointing to the Oregon
Electric Co. 's map showing route
through Oregon, probable exten
sions, etc., the Dallas Observer
finds good reason for consider
able optimism in regard to rail
Toad development. It says;
"Take the United Railway
Company, for instance: When
that company announced its in
tention of building an electric
line out of Portland, few people
gave its announcement any ser
ious consideration further than
to prophesy that it was seeking
to obtain a valuable right of way
only for the purpose of unloading
it on some other -company at a
fancy price. In the very face
of these unfavorable predictions;
the United Railways began act
ual construction work in Port
land and right now it is engaged
in building aline to Forest Grove,
"with Tillamook City as its evi
dent objective point. Who
Knows but this company may
also be planning to enter the
Willamette Valley with a system
Of trolley lines that will event
ually serve more territory than
those of the Oregon Electric
- Company? Just as' prominent
business men of Tillamook are
predicting that the United Rail
Ways' cars will beat the Harri
man trains into that city, there
are those who prophesy , that
this same company will build in
to Dallas sooner than will the
Oregon Electric and for all that
any resident of Polk County
knows, this surmise may yet
prove correct. Then there are
the Willamette Valley Electric,
the Southern Pacific, the Hirsch
berg and the Gerlinger companies
to be considered. No one can
even estimate the extent of rail
way development that is in store
for this valley within the next
five years.
"What does all this proposed
railway agitation mean? It
means that the time is not far
distant when every, village and
hamlet in Western Oregon will
no longer be obliged to depend
on any one, or any two, railroads
for its transporation facilities,
It means that the valley is on the
eve of a period of development
hitherto undreamed of by even
its most sanguine inhabitant,

It means that a country now
supporting less than 150,000
copulation will soon afford . a
livelihood for a million people,
with all of the attendant improv'
' ments and betterments that
such a change will bring. It
" means that the homeseeker or

present prices will eventually
realize a nront five times as
great as his original investment.

One doesn't 'expect much of a
butcher. He may be a capable,
cultured and intelligent gentle
man but no one ever gives him
credit for doing anything other
than cutting tough steaks for
people who want tender ones and
saving all the good meat for him
self. Doubtless this is true of
many butchers, but Corvallis has
at least one of another kind.
This man has one of the prettiest
properties in Corvallis and it
isn't because his house is a $6,000
mansion. While his residence is
one of the later, up-to-date kind,
a distinct credit to the city, the
real charm of the " place lies in
the great expanse of green and
the generous display of flowers
at the rear and at one side. This

When the Waldorf was project-

ed it was upon the very modest
estimate that each patron would
spend $8.00 a day; the" actual
expenditure is said to have been
$13.00. This was in 1893. And
since then many Waldorf shave
gone up. With them, too, have
gone up the cost of food, of la
bor, of construction and of real
estate; there are New York ho
tels on plots worth from $250 to
$300 the square foot. And with
all this there has mounted our
general standard of living; for
we must always remember that
few people go even to the most
expensive hotels against their
will. In three new and famous
houses visited by the writer, , the
price of 2 and 3-room suites
worked out to something like
$8.25 per room individually. Mul
tiply $8.25 by three and a half
and one has a sum very much
in excess of $13.00. Supposing
however, that we leave it at
that hgure, A hotel with ac
commodations for 1,000 guests,
running at three-fifths capacity,
to allow for the slack season,
gives us an income of $2,847,-
000 for the year. To this not
less than another half million
must be added as. the income
from the banquet and entertain
ment department. One Florida
hotel has accommodations for
2,000. On the American plan
this hotel makes a rate tor room
and board of $5.00 up. And
during its season it runs almost
to full capacity, This means,
for five months only, a minimum
or. $i,ouo,uuu. its real income
is undoubtedly nearer the. $2,-
000,000 mark. Putting it at
third, the investment works
out with sufficient accuracy for
the New Hampshire resort
hotels where $22, 285, 179 gives
us, "officially, $7,249,375. The
same ratio, for the Plaza in New
York, would produce nearly $4,
000,000; arid for the Waldorf
Astoria about $6,000,000.
