Missouri to Become a Pioneer In
a Big Prbblenv

Mrs. C. A. Murphy went to Eugene
yesterday on a visit. Mr. Murphy and
C. V. Johnson, whose wife is on a visit
in Southern Oregon, are now going to
have the time of their life. Mr. Mur
phy has been conducting a Racket store
so long that he is saturated with . the
idea and is ready to make a noise that
can be heard as far as Seattle. i

Rev. Father George P. Butler, who
has for so long been the faithful priest
in charge of St. Mary's Roman Catho
lic parish here, is to be transfered by
the Society of Jesuits to another field,
the exact location not being yet known
to him. He will be succeeded by Rev.
Father Henry A. Gabriel, S. J., who
has been stationed at Douglas, Alaska.
Father Butler has made . many warm
friends during his ministration here,
who, while regretting his . departure,
will wish him all success in whatever
field he may be assigned. . -
Some of the board walks in Job's
Addition -are in an .extuemeljj bad con
dition. These might be fixed before some
one -breaks a limb. The condition of
certain walks . this side of 9th is also
rather alarming. Where cement walks
have . been laid the connecting board
walk or crossing stands high above, a
condition that might result to serious
disadvantage. These places might well
be fixed in some way until such time as
the entire street can be improved pro
perly. There are three or four places
. in extreme condition.

Portland this morning that an operation
might be performed.
The Smlls were refused permission
to erect any sort of frame add ition at
the rear of the bakery and will make
improvements of brick, with which
they will probably be better satisfied.
A. L. Stevenson, who drew chance
No. 2022 in the Couer d' Alene drawing,
refuses to name a price for that chance.
He thinks Jack Dawson, Floyd Bogue,
Geo. Kerr, or some of the other fellows
who got left, would immediatly protest
his claim and cause him to lose. In a
private way he . expressed the opinion
that his chance is worth about $8,477.22

A couple of Albany's young men
came to Corvallis this morning and
made the mistake of tacking bills on
telephone poles, houses and every
othei space large enough. The boys
were enterprising, but this kind of en
terprise is not appreciated. in Corvallis,
so Chief Wells .took them in hand.
Judge Denman sssessed a fine of $5
in each instance.
Some of those who went to Spokane,
Missoula and Coue.r d' Alene to register
for land have been doing a little figur
ing. 'A rough estimate ,ol- the money
taken out of Benton county in this,
wild gobse chase places the amount at
$2,000, and up-to-date there is no evi
dence of return. It is estimated that
the railroads and Spokane received cash
amounting to three times the value of
all the lands covered by the drawings.

Prof, and Mrs. C. M. 'McKellips came
home yesterday from their extended
visit in Indiana, Seattle and northwest
points. While in Indiana they suffered
terribly ' from the heat and were glad
to start for old Oregon. Prof, and
Mrs. McKellips got an extra hustle on
because of the fact that the "Weiner
wurst" has been launched at Yaquina
bay and is being used solely by E. E.
Wilson, the other interested party.
This : launch is the result of the com
bined physical and mental effort of the
two gentlemen named, and the final
launching without his presence got on
Mac's nerves a little.
, ' Mrs. Mary .Barclay, was in the city
enroute to her home several miles
south of Corvallis. She has come from
a visit to her son, J; W. Hereon, at
Snohomish, Wash!, and brings with
her from there a girl, Pearl Ho hues,
who will visit here about a month.
While in Washington, Mrs. Barclay
was at the Seattle fair and enjoyed it
though she thinks it does not surpass
the Portland'f air. Nor does she think
the Washington country looks as good
as this section of Oregon. At the fair
she came to the conclusion that they
have there every conceivable scheme to
extract money from the visitor.
How the Bullion State Will Induce
Foreigners of the Right Kind to Set
tle Within Her Confines Value of
the Scheme.
Missouri has decided to take Its
pick of the immigration coming to the :
United States. Ever since Governor
Hadley took his seat the state authori
ties have been pondering over ways
and means to attract a desirable class
of immigrants to build up the waste
places and put more value into the
farm holdings. The Missouri State So
ciety of New York has also been
working at the other end of the line
to accomplish the same object. Last
winter these same patriotic sons of
Missouri, who make their homes in
New York, but-who have not lost in
terest in the welfare of their native
state, suggested that if a live, ener
getic agent were stationed at Ellis is
land, where the great bulk of immi
grants disembark, great good would be
likely to come of it. Now, after a con
ference with Commissioner Keefe of
the United States immigration bureau,
Commissioner Curran of the Missouri
immigration bureau has announced
that the state board will establish an
agency at the immigrant station at
Ellis island. The purpose is to work
in co-operation with the federal bu
reau in inducing as many immigrants
as possible of the right kind to make
their homes in Missouri.
Advantages of the State.
Thus Missouri is to become a pioneer
in solving the problem of distributing
immigrants throughout, the United
States instead of leaving them to act
upon their own resources without ad
vice or assistance of a trustworthy
kind. Two other states, Louisiana and
South Carolina, have tried the plan
and are much pleased with the results.
This state- is likely to be still more
so, inasmuch as it can offer many ad
vantages in climate, soil and social en
vironment which are lacking in the
semitropical gulf states. Besides be
ing centrally located, along the parallel
of travel east and west, Missouri prob
ably enjoys a greater diversity of soil
and climate, both of the most favor
able character, than any other state
in the Union. With fertile grain pro
ducing lands in its center-and north
ern counties, stock breeding and dairy
farms of the northwest tier, cotton and
tobacco in the southwest and its un
surpassed - fruit -orchards ' and vine
yards along the slopes of the Ozarks
in the southwest, this state presents
every advantage to the agricultural
immigrant that could be- desired, not
to speak of the coal,. Iron, zinc, lead
and other flourishing mining industries
which extend from the extreme north
western to the southwestern borders,
affording employment at high wages
to many thousands of sturdy workers.
Many workmen in the coal " mines of
this state net upward of 7 a day from
eight hours of labor. Thus no indus
trious immigrant . who settles in this
state will- have occasion to regret his
choice so far as material prosperity
is concerned, while from a social point
of view no warmer hearted and more
hospitable people can be found - on
earth than the native Missourians. -
National Bureau to Be Established.
. The federal authorities are said to
be so much impressed with the Mis
souri idea of the state going directly
to the source of supply to obtain the
pick of the immigrants that they have
decided to establish a national immi
gration bureau at Washington to direct
immigrants to favorable locations
throughout the United States and to
gather information along this line for
the. benefit of states that may desire
to take advantage of the opportunity
to augment their population. This
plan, if intelligently pursued, ought to
go far to establish the much desired.

and west which has been sought after
for years alike by public4 officers in the
bureau of immigration and private
philanthropists. At least it cannot fall
to lessen the tremendous congestion or
aliens in the large cities of the east,
which is fast becoming a menace to
