Kerr leaves tonight for at Seattle. V the exposition A large awning is being put up in front of the Farmers , hotel. This is necessitated by removal of the large trees that stood there until a few weeks ago. Corvallis is sometimes behind but sel dom entirely out of the running. Even in the drawing for Coeur d'Alene land, Corvallis comes in for her littie share. Hon. A. L. Stevenson, real estate man, auctioneer, booster, 'and automobile fiend, came in on number 2022, and af ter that number have made selection of land he may go to the reservation and take his choice of what is left. Con sidering the fact that there were but 3000 chances, A. L. 's is probably worth less than a half-million dollars. If pressed right hard he might take 25c for it. But he won, and that beats Caleb Davis, "Jr., Jack Dawson, George Kerr and all the rest. the lawn bed should be made as smooth as a table. This will re quire a little extra work, but the end will justify it. When it comes to using the mower, the bumpy, uneven lawn is a source of annoyance, for a mower can not be made to cut the grass evenly on sueh ground. If its worth while to make a lawn, its well worth while to do the' little extra work necessary to make a lawn that will be the pride of every beholder. - The difference in city and town houses is not so much a matter of money as it is pride and care ful effort. He is located at 136 North Second street and has de cided to remain here permanently. He likes Corvallis so well that he has induced several "prominent Eastern Oregon people to come over here and make investments. Forty-two are taking the county ex amination for teachers' license. The room is given over to the struggle. Tomorrow afternoon is ladies' day at the Commercial Club rooms. The rooms are always cool and delightful and a source of pleasure to all who go there. Cheif Wells told Mr. Burnap to fix his board walk on Third between Wash ington and A streets, and the real estate man got mad and is now laying a cement walk there. If every other person would get angry in the same way, Corvallis would be the gainer. The Peterson barber shop, in the building adjoining the Hotel Corvallis, will soon be ready for occupancy. A new front will be put into the building there, and already the inside is under going repairs. .Peterson will install up-to-date equipment and will have a two tub bathroom. YOU CAN SAVE MONEY BY BUYING HERE NOW Henhle & Davis Do you remember Neil New- house's place, at the corner of 6th and Jefferson, before the fence was removed? The fence about (this property was a , substantial one, not particularly a beauty in appearance, but no pickets were missing and that fence could have stood there indefinitely without becoming unsightly. But Neil had no horses or chickens to keep in and came to the conclusion that his fence was not needed to keep animals out, so he removed it. Is there a person in this city recalling the appearance of the property some time ago who wil say that the removal of the fence I t 1 1 r tias not aaaea du per cent in beauty? Mr. New house's well- kept lawn is now in full view and the house, which is set invitingly low does not look like it is m . a stockade. The Taylor property is not Jl 1 V wonuenui m any sense, but is pleasing to look at. The struct ure is Deuer tnan tne average, but it is the harmonv in -.the paint and surroundings, and the charm there is in a good lawn, a row of fine roses, and clematis. that pleases one with this prop erty. And here is one example of what a high hedge may be us ed tor to no disadvantage cut ting off the back yard. Mr. New house may well feel pleased over the present appearance of his property, for it is pleasing to at who pass, and is a boost for the city. Many lawns in this city give evidence that proper preparation of the, bed was not made. While many lawns are fresh and green. they are very uneven and neces sarily hard to cut satisfactorily, Those who expect to plant lawns in the future should profit by the experience of their f ellowtowns- Perhaps more than a few would regard it as an imposition on per sonal rights for this city to pre scribe property lines, the distance forward at which a residence might be set on any lot in a , giv en block, but it seems that some provision of the sort is about all that will cause people io be mind- ul of beauty and the feelings of their neighbors. A case in mind is the rooming house being erect ed on Monroe, just west of Jactf Milne's. While there are no neighbors to be disturbed at pres ent, except Jack, that house in its present location on the lot makes it impossible for that block ever to take on a pleasing appear ance. The building is set almost on the street, so that residences on either side for a considerable distance will be cut off from any view. Until it rots down it will stand there and be as unsatisfac tory to other residents on the block as a pole in the street would be to teamsters who must drive around it constantly. Sup pose, for instance, that Mrs. C, EL Lee had set her splendid little house forward to within five feet of the sidewalk, what would have been the effect on the very at tractive block west of 9th and Jefferson? Take any of the good ooking residence blocks in the city and set one of the residences fifteen feet further front than the established property line, ancH what would be the result? This rooming house is not mentioned in severe criticism it is merely cited as an instance and as a warning to others who might un wittingly make the same mistake. Corvallis is glad Mr. Walker is building a house there, but we believe he will gree with the great majority that he could have set his building further back to the distinct advantage of the street and the appearance of his building. Others may well keep this in mind and when building give some consideration to their neighbors, the appearance of the city and to the appearance of their own residence, which can not possibly be enhanced by be ing placed too close to the street ine.
