for a week to make changes that
would satisfy programs leaders.
“If you care so much about stu
dents ... all we’re asking for is a
week,” Le said.
PFC member Scott Lu said he has
talked to more groups that are hesitant
about it than those indifferent to it.
Walsh and Hudson said the model
is fair because it pays leaders more for
the significant responsibilities and ex
cessive workloads required to make
programs and governing bodies func
tion successfully.
They said enough time was allotted
and adequate efforts to notify groups
were made for comment and feed
back. Walsh said program leaders are
irresponsible because they didn’t at
tend earlier stipend model workshops
or respond to e-mails.
“This falls on the hands of program
directors who are on the list serves.
They know that this stipend model is
affecting them and the livelihood of
their group,” Walsh said.
Also at the Senate meeting, student
radio station KWVA was given
$151,000 in over-realized funds, mon

when enrollment exceeds predictions
and extra revenue comes in.
The EMU Board of Directors de

KWVA to its budget would not force
the EMU to spend more in its budg

The transfer will make KWVA a
more financially stable program.

IN BRIEF
University alumna speaks
on her career in cartooning
After Cartoonist Jan Eliot graduat
ed from the University in 1977, she
went on to create the comic strip
“Stone Soup,” making her one of out
of nine women who have comic
strips in syndication. There is a total
of 250 syndicated strips.
Eliot will deliver a speech entitled
“The Business of Being Funny” in
302 Gerlinger Hall from 10 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. today.
During the seminar, Eliot plans to
explore how the funny pages have
evolved over the past 100 years,
why there aren’t many women in
the comics business and what it
takes to be a syndicated cartoonist.
Eliot began cartooning in 1979 and
her strip can now be found on the fun
ny pages of 140 newspapers interna
tionally. Stone Soup will celebrate its
10th birthday this month.
Eliot will receive an Alumni Fellow
Award for humanities from the College
of Arts and Sciences at a closed invita
tion banquet this evening.
Other college alumni fellow award
winners include Patrick Gray and
William Drozdiak.
Gray will be awarded in the sciences
category for his achievements in
biotechnology. He played an instru
mental role in discovering the Hepatitis
B vaccine, Alumni and Donor Rela
tions Coordinator Katrina McGee said.
Gray graduated in 1974 with a degree
in biology.
Drozdaik won the social sciences
category. He’s currently a foreign cor

He graduated from the University in
1971 with a bachelor’s degree in politi
