Book: 'Ghosts' authors are LCC students

people take these long walks down
by the train track," Engstrom said.
The only obligation is to complete
a story.
Group unity is built through
brainstorming and receiving feed
back on stories during meals and a
reading time.
"During the meals we have
an opportunity for teaching,"
Engstrom said.
The group members read their
stories by candlelight on Saturday
night in a boathouse that sits near
the lake.
"We either scare each other or
make each other laugh, whatever
the intent of the author is,"
Smee explained.
The group gives each other feed
back but not much criticism
because most drafts are in begin
ning stages. Each story is revised
before submission.
The workshop teaches students
how to deal with an editor, proof
read, rewrite and brainstorm. Most
importantly, students learn howto
write on a deadline, Engstrom said.
Writers, although mostly local,
have come from Washington, Cali
fornia, Hawaii, Arizona and Portland.
Engstrom said people hear about the
workshop by word-of-mouth.
Most who attend the workshop
can't get enough; Engstrom typically
has regulars who sign up each year.
The class fills up on the first day of
registration at LCC, she said.
"I have a deeply disturbed follow
ing," Engstrom said.
Smee, one of the proclaimed fol
lowers, has been attending the
workshop for 10 years.
He said he is interested in "the
stuff that takes the mundane world
and makes you look at it anew."
His story featured in Volume 2 is
loosely based on Canadian singer
Gordon Lightfoot's 1970s hit "Wreck
of the Edmund Fitzgerald," a song
about the sinking of a Great Lakes
ore carrier.
"The only survivor of a ship wreck
is reminiscing and describes what
happened on his ship. It definitely
takes a turn for the spooky," he said.
Smee said the story has an "eerie
feeling."
A book signing featuring 20
authors of "Ghost at the Coast" will
be at Tsunami Books at 2585
Willamette St. in Eugene today at 7
p.m. Both volumes will be available
for purchase.

Lichty: Be a diva and scare the masses
Continued from page 5
Olsen. All you've got to do is go to
Goodwill and pick up a pair of stock
ings, cowboy boots, a strangely pat
terned skirt (paisleys would probably
be nice) and a sweaterfound in the
men's section that preferably goes
down to your calves. Don'tforgetthe
long scarf and chunky jewelry as well.
Carrying around a $1,500 purse is also a
good idea. Now, don't brush your hair
and remember, when you pose for pic
tures with all of your "fans," make sure
you stick your lips out like a duck.
All right, next up is Pop Princess
Britney Spears. This one will be a lit
tle trickier, but luckily you only need
two items to pull this look off. Your
first accessory will be a grande frap
puccino from Starbucks (any flavor
will do). Now all you need is a man
with cornrows who wears baggy
pants, a wife beater and socks with
sandals to follow you around and
spend all of your money. Talk with a
slight southern twang (saying "y'all"
as in "Y'all so funny!" will help), and
you'll complete the package.
Another great costume is Angelina
Jolie. First off, you'll need an adorable
kid from Cambodia and a sweet little
baby from Ethiopia to carry around
with you at all times. Do not let them
getaway—they will help protect you
from the paparazzi and will easily de
fer your home-wrecker image. For
clothes, Jolie keeps it simple—just
an expensive cashmere black shirt
and a $400 pair of jeans will do. Don't
fret if your lips aren't as luscious as
Miss Jolie's. Just use your lip liner and
color a little outside the lines. Voila!
Jessica Simpson is easy (pun very
much intended). To pull her look off,
never, evertake off your sunglasses—
they help shield your lying eyes. Daisy
Dukes will help, but if the night's too
cold, just tuckyour skinny jeans into
your cowboy boots. Now, don't wear a
wedding ring and find a guy who will
completely ignore you all night (he'll
play the role of "Nick"). Then all you've
got to do to pull off the Jessica person
ality is get really, really drunk and flirt
with any man in sight. See? Easy!
It isn't hard to pull off any celebri
ty's looks if you try hard enough. Just
gather your favorite celebrity
glossies and find a look that's right
for your Halloween night. And if you
can convince your friends, have
them dress up as paparazzi and fol
low you around all night. You'll be a
star — if only for one night.
