Whitehead and Stewart have bonded as the younger tailback has gained insight into every thing relating to college football. It has helped. Stewart, after missing two games with an ankle injury suffered against Montana, has returned with a flourish, scoring two rush ing touchdowns and catching a third in his first game back against Stanford. He fol lowed that gem with 34 yards rushing on nine carries against host Arizona State in an Oregon 31-17 win. Feeling healthier against Washington, Stewart returned two kickoffs for 69 total yards, including a 36-yarder. The most im pressive part of his performance, which in cluded 26 yards on six carries, was a 17 yard run in the third quarter along the right sideline for a touchdown. His play this season isn’t the only reason people are high on the Wash ington native. His high school re sume helped, including being Wash ington’s all-time leading rusher and considered by ESPN.com as the No. 2 prep recruit in the nation for his recruiting class. Maybe it was fitting that Stewart had his initial ESPN highlight on a run that required multiple defenders to pull him down in Oregon’s season opener. Focusing on this season and most importantly the next game against Arizona, the Oregon running attack, including Whitehead and Stewart, should have plenty of opportuni ties. Arizona allows an average of 199.2 rushing yards per game and has allowed 11 rushing touchdowns. A — Jeffrey Dransfeldt Running Back Mike Bell Mike Bell has been a workhorse this season. Bell has twice come close to posting 1,000-yard seasons in his ca reer. In 2003 and 2004 he broke the 900-yard mark and is on pace to earn his first 1,000-yard season this year. Last week against Stanford, Bell rushed for 88 net yards and one touchdown in Arizona’s 20-16 loss. His 88 yards moved him into the top five for all-time rushers in school histo ry, totaling 2,661 career yards on 584 attempts — 20 less carries than Arizona’s all-time leading tailback TLung Candidate, who amassed 3,824 yards from 1996 99. Bell has managed to lead the team in rushing yards for three consecutive years. Bell’s numbers this season are not indica tive of his talent. He has explosive speed in the open field, but has had trouble break ing through defenses in light of Arizona’s porous offensive line. Bell also poses a threat as a receiver. He is known to run quick routes in short-yardage situations stretching for first downs. He posted 136 receiving yards as a freshman in 2002. Bell has made an impact for Ari zona since his freshman year, when then-head coach John Mackovic moved him from being a redshirt to sharing snaps at tailback. He is best membered for mnning circles around Arizona State’s defense en route to 139 rushing yards in last year’s 34-27 upset over the Sun Devils. Against Oregon, Bell was held to 65 rushing yards last season and 54 the season before. Arizona’s best chance to win this sea son is to put the ball in Bell’s hands and watch excitement happen. Bell is mak ing his mark at Arizona, despite play ing through several of the roughest years in the program’s history. - Scott J.
