Arizona State vs. University of Oregon
Quarterback
Sam Keller
Oregon had better be wary of an angry quarterback searching
for redemption.
That is exactly what Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller is.
Top-ranked USC had the Sun Devil signal caller by the tail in the
second half last week, when Keller threw four intercep
tions. By the time the game had finished, Arizona
State had given up a 21-3 halftime lead. The
fourth quarter was especially difficult as the ball
deflected off an Arizona State receiver and into
the hands of a USC player twice.
Prior to the game, Keller tossed four touch
down passes in each of
the season’s first four
games and accounted
for 1,443 passing yards.
Sun Devil quarter
backs have had big games
against the Oregon second
ary in recent years. Former
quarterback Andrew Walter torched the
Ducks for 1,016 yards and nine touch
downs to lead the Sun Devils to victories
the past three years.
Oregon has given up an average of 262.8
passing yards and 2.2 touchdown throws this
season, placing them seventh in the Pacific
10 Conference in pass defense. They have
recorded eight interceptions, which is second
best in the conference.
Keller currently ranks third in the NCAA in
total offense (348 yards per game) and 12th
in passing efficiency (161.3). He leads the
Pac-10 Conference in passing average (358),
total offense and touchdown passes with 18.
The junior from Danville, Calif., complet
ed 25 of 45 attempts for 370 yards and three
touchdowns in his first career start — a 27
23 victory over Purdue in the Sun Bowl on
New Year’s Eve. He had completed 40 of 69
for 483 yards and three touchdowns in 11
appearances as a reserve.

Defensive Tackle
Haloti Ngata
Junior defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has been a consistent
force on Oregon’s defensive line since earning a starting spot
at tackle his freshman year in 2002. His strength and quick
first step off of the line have made him a cause for concern
for offensive coordinators that
have to make sure he is ac
counted for on every play.
As a freshman, he was best
remembered for blocking kicks
against UCLA, USC and Wash
ington. He blocked a field goal
attempt of Stanford kicker
Michael Sgroi last weekend
marking the sixth of his colle
giate career.
Ngata faced a major setback his
sophomore year when he suffered a
season-ending knee injury in the first
quarter of the opening game against Mis
sissippi State, which sidelined him for
2003. Ngata was granted a medical redshirt
for the season and returned in 2004 to earn
second-team all Pacific-10 Conference ac
claim, despite not playing at full strength. The
Salt Lake City native posted forced fumbles
against Washington and Oregon State that
same year and added a career-best eight
tackles against Arizona.
Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti de
mands much from Ngata, who is by far the
strongest player on his roster. Ngata bench
es more than 500 pounds and squats more
than 550.
“(Ngata) is working hard. He is getting
better. He is a dominant person and he re
ceives a lot of attention from the offenses we
play,” Bellotti said. “The bar has been raised
for guys like Haloti. It may be unfair what we
ask him to do, but I hold him to a higher
standard, and I think he is comfortable
with that. He wants to achieve that level.”
