Preview: Ducks in position
to beat opening day records
Continued from page 2
Conference leading 41 sacks, while
the defense allowed an average of
25.6 points and 338.9 yards per
game. An average of 8.6 penalties per
game cost the Ducks 877 total yards
on the season.
“We knew that it was a horrible sea
son; it was embarrassing,” Oregon de
fensive end Devan Long said.
One of the biggest opportunities for
improvement is in the defensive back
field, led by senior corners Justin
Phinisee and Aaron Gipson.
“Overall the philosophy is simply
win on defense,” said Phinisee.
“I believe we are as good as any
years past.”
While the Oregon defense is keyed
to show improvement, the Cougar de
fense remains questionable. Houston
allowed 32.2 points and 399.3 yards
per game last season.
If the Cougar defense hasn’t im
proved, several Duck opening day
records could fall. Rushing yards (202
by Reuben Droughns in 1998), passing
yards (443 by Bill Musgrave in 1990),
touchdown passes (four by Akili Smith
in 1998) and receiving yards (206 by
Tony Hargain in 1990) are coveted
records that this season’s wide-open
offense could break.
Clemens already owns the fourth
best opening day passing yardage per
formance with 317 yards against Indi
ana last year, meanwhile senior
Demetrius Williams holds the third
and fourth-best opening day receiving
yardage performance with 135 yards
against Mississippi State in 2003 and
129 yards against Indiana.
In the history of both programs, Ore
gon and Houston have faced each oth
er once, with the Ducks winning 15-14
in 1983. Oregon trailed the entire game
until running back Kevin McCall scored
on a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:52
remaining to take the victory. Oregon
linebacker Lerry Wilson recorded 20
tackles and was named the Pac-10 de
fensive player of the week.
