IN BRIEF
Questions surround
law school student fees
The cost of a law school education is
easy to determine by looking at the
Knight Law School’s Web site: $16,156
for in-state tuition for the 2004-05
school year. However, the purpose for
tuition and fees may be more complex.
Recent graduates and current law
students say they have never complete
ly understood what their law school re
source fee is for or why it is separate
from their tuition and University fees.
r
According to the University’s busi
ness department, law students and oth
er graduate students pay roughly the
same amount in tuition and fees for the
2005-06 school year, more than $10,500
a year. However, the law school adds a
resource fee of $6,250 per year for first
year law students and $7,250 for sec
ond- and third-year students.
Associate Dean of Finance and Oper
ations for the law school Jamie Moffitt
said the resource fee bridges the gap be
tween University money and the cost of
additional law school services.
Moffitt said the amount the law
school receives from the school has
“leveled off’ in recent years and the ad
ditional fee is used both for programs
and support staff.
Moffitt said the fee is used for rein
vesting in the academic program and
increasing the scholarship fund.
Law students also pay the same
amount of incidental, health center and
recreation center fees as other students,
but some services close when students
on the quarter system are not in school.
Moffitt said Liane Richardson, Assis
tant Dean for Student Affairs at the law
school has tried to obtain temporary
passes to local gyms.
