■ Duck track and field
Ducks run away with four medals
The Oregon track and field team had several placing
performances during the Outdoor Championships
SHAWN MILLER
SPORTS EDITOR
Current and future Oregon track
and field athletes combined for four
medals and two individual titles at
the USA Outdoor Senior and Junior
Championships in Carson, Calif.,
June 23-26.
Rachel Yurkovich, a future Duck
from Newberg High School, won
the junior women’s javelin (166
feet, 1 inch) by nearly two feet over
second-place finisher Kara Patter
son (164-4).
Yurkovich also placed fifth in the
women’s javelin (170-3) and was
the top prep finisher in the event.
Sarah Malone earned her second
consecutive third-place finish in the
javelin (176-2) at the US Champi
onships. Recent NCAA champion
Dana Pounds of Air Force finished
second (177-4) behind overall win
ner and Olympian Kim Kreiner
(193-5).
Malone’s toss was her second
best of the season, following a
throw of 186-10 that won the West
Regional on May 27.
“It was a great competition and
great to see Sarah go out on a posi
tive note with a good throw — one
of the best of her season,” Oregon
assistant coach Lance Deal said. “It
was also nice to see Rachel mix it
up with the big girls as a high
school senior, and we look forward
to working with her the next few
years. ”
Oregon freshman Galen Rupp
placed second (3:47.47) in the jun
ior 5,000 meters. Rupp won his
prelim and was ranked second, 1.61
seconds behind the first heat win
ner Mark Matusak. Matusak out
kicked Rupp in the closing meters
to win the final by a mere four
tenths of a second.
Incoming freshman Rebekah No
ble won the junior women’s 800
with a personal best (2:03.73). No
ble, who was ranked third going
into the final, outran BYU freshman
Heidi Magill (2:04.99) and Califor
nia’s Alysia Johnson (2:07.20).
A top three performance in the
USA Championships opens the door
for eligibility on the US team for the
IAAF World Championships in
Helsinki, Finland Aug. 6-14. The
top two finishers in any junior event
will earn an invitation to the 2005
Pan American Junior Athletics
Championships in Windsor, On
tario, Canada, July 28-31.
Other finishers on the men’s side
include sixth- and seventh-place
finishes from future Ducks Matthew
Maloney (205-0) and Alex Wolff
(200-9) in the junior men’s javelin,
respectively. Leonidas Watson fin
ished seventh in the long jump (25
6) and eighth in the triple jump (52
1 1/4). Tommy Skipper tied for
ninth in the pole vault (17-8 1/2),
J.K. Withers placed 11th (3:58.53)
in the junior men’s 1,500, Scott
Wall added 12th in the junior men’s
5,000 (14:51.77), Eric Logsdon end
ed 14th (13:51.10) in the 5,000 and
Brett Holts ended his Duck career
19th (8:52.92) in the steeplechase.
Future Ducks Ashley McCrea and
Megan Maloney earned top 10 in
throws. McCrea finished fifth (146
11) in the junior women’s javelin
and Maloney placed 10th (153-2) in
the junior women’s hammer. Bree
Fuqua earned 17th (48-4 1/2) in the
shot put.
