    University appoints interim positions
Current University employees were chosen to
temporarily fill three top administrative vacancies

The University announced last
week three interim appointees to fill
top administrative positions dealing
with issues such as diversity and
multicultural concerns, as well as
student services.
The appointees will fill the three
spots left vacant by the resignation of
former administrators Greg Vincent
and Anne Leavitt. Vincent is the
former vice provost for institutional
equity and diversity, and Leavitt is
the former vice president for
student affairs and the former dean
of students.
Charles Martinez, an associate
professor of educational leadership
and a researcher at the Oregon So
cial Learning center, has been ap
pointed interim vice provost for in
stitutional equity and diversity.
Martinez is currently part of
the executive workgroup for
the University’s Five-Year Di
versity Plan, which will be a
major part of the agenda for
the office of institutional
equity and diversity over the
next year.
“There are huge challenges
in terms of where the plan has
been and where it’s going,”
he said.
“I’m looking forward to the
challenges,” Martinez said.
“I think I’m also appropriately
apprehensive... We have
complex issues facing us
around diversity.”
Martinez said he’s glad for
the opportunity to immerse
himself in administration
without giving up his teach
ing and research projects.
Mike Eyster, who currently
serves as the assistant
vice president for student
affairs as well as director of
housing, has been appointed
interim vice president for
student affairs.
According to Eyster, the
various offices that make
up student affairs — which
include the EMU, financial aid
and scholarships, admissions,
the registrar and others —
have only been working as
a cohesive whole for a
couple years.
“Obviously that’s going to
be something we want to con
tinue and do even better,” he
said. Eyster said he wants to
maintain this cohesion for a
permanent vice president.
“If that’s the environment
they can step into then they’re
going to be able to hit the
ground running,” Eyster said.
Eyster also said that the stu
dent affairs division wanted to
maintain its commitment to
cultural competency training.
“I see that as being an ongoing
commitment,” he said.
Eyster listed high turnover in the
administration and funding as two
of the primary challenges facing his
office next year.
“The level of support we’re re
ceiving from the state is not ade
quate for what we’re trying to do,”
he said.
Robin Holmes has been appoint
ed interim dean of students. Holmes
is currently the director of the Coun
seling and Testing Center as well as
a clinical psychologist with a private
practice in town. At the time of pub
lication, the Emerald was unable to
reach her for comment.
Vincent left the University to
serve as vice provost for inclusion
and cross-cultural effectiveness at
the University of Texas at Austin.
Leavitt left the University to serve
as the director of scholarship
programs for the nonprofit Ford
Family Foundation.
A search for permanent candi
dates to fill these administrative po
sitions will begin in the fall.

IN BRIEF
"Dog at large" turns out
to be a crocodile
Eugene police officers and Lane
County animal control officers re
sponded to a report of a “small
alligator” at large in northeast
Eugene on Friday.
Officers captured the reptile,
which turned out to be a 4-foot
long caiman, an American species
of crocodile.
Since caimans are neither native
nor prevalent in Eugene, the report
was recorded as a “dog at large” in
the police dispatch system because
that was the closest incident code
under which to log the incident, ac
cording to a Eugene Police Depart
ment news release.
