but to promote intelligent engagement."
He expressed his excitement in joining a
top school such as the University of Virginia.
Unlike at the University of Oregon,
UVa has a Ph D. program in Religious
Studies, meaning that Gianotti will have
the opportunity to help educate future
religious scholars of America, he said.
UVa Religious Studies Department
Chair Harry Gamble said Gianotti's ex
perience in the Middle East and the "con
stellation of his teaching and research" will
"extend the range and richness of our un
dergraduate and graduate programs." He
will help make UVa a prominent center for
work in the study of Islam, he said.
Bom and raised in Portland, Gianotti is a
Fulbright Scholarship winner for the study
of Advanced Arabic and Islamic History at
the University of Iordan. He earned his
Ph D. in Islamic Studies in 1998 from the
University ofToronto.
For the five years leading up to his move
back to Oregon, Gianotti taught as the first
Islamic Studies professor at Pennsylvania
State University. "Now I'll have the resources
to get back to researching and writing while
providing for my family," he said about the
move to Virginia.
