most exciting event in track and field,
and here is the chance to be at the
center of the universe for a few mo
ments. You rarely get a chance like
this in life so you have to go for
broke, and they pulled it off. ”
Kent led off with a 46.1-second
opening split, followed by Inico
(44.4) giving the Ducks second
place at the halfway mark. Ik
wuakor finished the third leg (45.4)
in a tight battle for second with Ari
zona State University before hand
ing off to the anchor Scherer.
Louisiana State University
(2:59.59) broke the NCAA meet and
collegiate record (2:59.91 UCLA -
1988), while ASU (3:00.57) edged
Oregon in the final 50 meters for
second place.
“If someone had told me we would
run three (minutes) at the NCAA’s, I
wouldn’t have believed that we would
get third,” said Ikwuakor, courtesy of
goducks.com. “We have nothing to be
ashamed of. There was so much emo
tion out there with the national cham
pionship. I was pretty nervous coming
in, but once I got the baton I felt fine.”
The previous school record
(3:03.27) was established at the
2005 Pac-10 Championships, hosted
by UCLA May 14-15 .
Before the record-setting relay, Inico,
a senior, earned his first outdoor All
America honor with an eighth-place
finish in the 400 (45.85).
“Matt, Jordan, AK and Tfavis (An
derson) are back next year, but losing
Kedar won’t be easy to replace,” said
Steele, courtesy of goducks.com.
“When I watched them race here in
Sacramento three years ago, I
thought they had the makings of a
great team. It’s been a gradual
process that has required a lot of
work, but they’ve met the challenge
and continued to improve every step
of the way.
“The feelings of nervousness be
fore and joy afterwards pretty much
surpasses anything I ever felt as
an athlete.”
Eric Logsdon made his third ap
pearance in the NCAA outdoor 5,000,
where he finished 12th (14:20.21).
The Oregon men finished tied for
ninth place with 23 team points, their
third ninth-place finish in
five years.
Sarah Malone’s second-place fin
ish in the javelin (169-4) gave the
Oregon women eight points to tie
for 32nd.
Lauryn Jordan finished 14th in the
heptathlon with a career-best score
of 5,367.
Other Oregon finishers included
12th-place finishes from Bree Fuqua’s
in the shot put (50-4) and Brittany
Hinchcliffe in the hammer (189-11).
