How to beat summer
heat in a horrific way
I hate summer. Can't go outside be- —*
cause it's too hot and sticky and I can't breath
the pollen-polluted air. Can't stay at home be
cause it roasts like a broiler. Can’t really do
much of anything otherthan skip from one air
conditioned building to the next, impotently
cursing the weather.
About all that gets me through each summer
season are horror films. It's nice that there is
an entire genre of cinema that reflects my
mood during these painful months. I've got a
few projects for this year's bout of horrorphilia.
I think I'll begin by completing my essay "Night
of the Living Dead as American Political Text."
I think I'll do an overview of Stuart Gordon
films. I might also take the time to review the
complete "The Exorcist" series, including both
versions of the prequel.
Oh yes, I've also written a script that has
been turned into a film.
I won't bore you with the details (and I won't
embarrass myself by giving you the title). Suf
fice to say it's short (about 13 minutes I've
been told), I wrote it at the request of a friend
and it is essentially an exercise in finding
creative ways to kill people with gardening im
plements. While I have not yet seen the com
pleted project, I've seen some wonderfully
graphic shots from the set and I think they
have grasped the tone I was aiming for in
my writing.
This is an unusual experience for me be
cause it is the first time that I have stepped

The heat of summer promises
some cool styles from bohemian skirts
and tunics to Bermuda shorts

The days have finally started to get longer, the
weather has been setting record highs, and many stu
dents are itching get out of school. Summer has ar
rived and turned up the heat with some flirty, flowy
fashion trends for summer 2005.
The most noticeable fashion trend for this summer
has gotto be the tunic. It's everywhere from Old Navy
commercials to the runways in Milan. The long-length
tank is a hot look to wear over swimsuits or even for a
night out on the town. It has made belts obsolete, and
it is easy to pair the tunic with another hot look for this
summer: the bohemian skirt.
"A lot of times we'll see a tunic with a flowy skirt,"
said Amanda Hubbert, an employee at Eugene bou
tique Melange, located at 248 E. Fifth Ave. Suite 10.
"It's really cute. There's not too much skin showing on
top—just a little bit, which is hot for this year."
Pairing the long, flowy skirts with a stylish tunic or
strappy tank top is definitely a must. Adding bangle
bracelets or chunky gold, brown or turquoise jewelry

AlkalineTrio, "Crimson": With five amazing full-length CDs under its belt it wouldn't be surprising if Alkaline Trio
missed the target at least once. Fear not, fans, for this is notthat album. "Crimson," while perhaps the band's weakest al
bum to date, still managesto maintain strong vocals and dark lyrics about drinking, death and the devil. While many bands
fail to preserve the sound that has made them so well-loved by fans, Alkaline Trio doesn't make that mistake, although
there are a few more tracks to skip on this one.
"Time To Waste" is the opening track, which once again proves thatthis distinctive indie-punk Chicago-based band
truly knows howto kick off an album. The ominous, sinister chords, performed to perfection on a piano, launch off what
becomes a rocking, catchy tune that has got to be one of the best on the CD. "Mercy Me," although the poppiest track on
the album, is easily likable and manages to balance poppy melodies and the dark lyrics that Alkaline Trio is so well known
for. "Dethbed" is another favorite, as is "Bum" and "Sadie," which tells of the real-life tragic tale of Charles Manson's
family member Sadie Mae Glutz. The weakesttracks on the album include Dan Andriano's "The Poison" and "Settle for
Satin." It is also quite disappointing thatthe band chooses to end the album with "Smoke," a mediocre Andriano track, in
stead of one of the usual acoustic Matt Skiba ballads, which are more often than not some of the best Alkaline Trio songs.
All in all, "Crimson" is not a bad album, although perhaps not quite up to par with the others.
