Rumsfeld named in lawsuit
alleging prisoner torture
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Defense
Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is re
sponsible for torture and abuse of
prisoners held by the U.S. military in
Iraq and Afghanistan and should
compensate the victims, a lawsuit
contended Tliesday.
The suit was filed on behalf of four
Iraqis and four Afghans who allege
they suffered severe and repeated
beatings, cutting with knives, sexual
humiliation and assault, mock execu
tions, death threats and restraint in
excruciating positions.
They were held in Afghanistan and
Iraq in 2003 and 2004, were never
charged with crimes and have been
released, according to officials at the
American Civil Liberties Union and
Human Rights First, the groups that
filed the suit.

of ID card as a bus pass on April l.
“If (students) have an old card that
has a 950 number on it, it’ll be good
for campus, but (the Deady Hall) de
sign is being discontinued,” he said.
Individuals who have their Social
Security numbers stolen are at risk of
identity theft.
“It’s not so much a risk carrying it
around,” said Pam Olshanski, a Eu
gene Police Department spokes
woman. “The danger is when you in
advertently lose it.
“It’s a good safety measure to en
sure that you don’t lose your wallet if
you carry your Social Security card in
it and you don’t put your Social Secu
rity number on your checks. ”
Olshanski added that there are no
identity theft cases that have been
linked directly to the Social Security
number printed on a University ID,
but that an identity thief could use a
Social Security number to open
accounts in someone else’s name.
Woodruff said the University used
the Deady Hall design of the ID from
1996 to 2002. There are no plans to
change the design in the near future.
According to the Card Office,
anyone who still uses his or her So
cial Security number as a University
ID number or a card of the old de
sign should have it converted. There
is no charge for the process, provid
ed students bring their old cards
with them to the office, which is
open Monday through Friday 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m.

Gender: Cantu emphasized the

ethnic minorities are most successful
at historically minority-based institu
tions and that universities need to look
to those institutions for examples.
“Leadership needs to look at mod
els of successful, sustained diversity
within institutions,” Moses said.
“Partnership with institutions and
places where the pipeline is filled
with people you want. ”
Fraser discussed education as a in
strument for social mobility. She also
discussed the changes that gender and
ethnic studies classes have made.
“There has been the emergence of
African-American studies, women’s
studies, Latino studies,” Moses said.
“They have been institutionally mar
ginalized, yet they are central to the
survival of the academy. History is a

Cantu’s main point was that the
struggles women and racial minori
ties face are issues that affect the
entire population.
“Race and gender are connected,”
Cantu said. “All of us can become al
lies to each other. Get involved, be an
ally, be a supporter.”
Cantu also emphasized the need
for solutions and goals instead of a
focus on current problems.
“When you bring forth a problem,
you need to have a solution in mind,”
Cantu said. “Know what your mis
sion is, what your goal is and what
you will produce. ”
